Combo guns

My old accountant had one of these hanging above his office - think he said it was .22/.410. Always thought it looked cool.

I can remember a 22/410 standing in a corner of my Grandparents cabin, probably 50 years ago. Do not know the make as a kid, was pretty much hands off for me being a little too young? Always loaded, ready to take care of the varmints.

I just remembered the old Garcia .22/.410 Combo gun I had in 70s. It was pretty primative but worked and was light to carry behind the VW truck seat I was driving at the time, gave it to a buddy in 79 I think he lost it in later 80s somewhere in Alaska. He said it was pretty well used up !

I've got the Savage 24V in .222Remington over a 20 gauge shotgun. I put a see thru scope mount along with an inexpensive Bushnell scope, and even placed a recoil pad on the Monte Carlo walnut stock. It came in pretty handy when the coyotes started to over run the quail population out here around 1993/94. I used it on quail, using my Labrador Retriever to kick them up, and I dusted quite a few coyotes, as well as quail while out in the desert hunting birds. I still have it, although I haven't used it in quite a while, but it was like having 2 long guns in one on those bird hunts back in the early 90's. I was going to have the rifle barrel reamed to .223, but I figured I'd leave it alone since I loaded for the .222 anyway. I don't remember what I paid for it, but I bought it used, but it looked every bit as new, as it does today except for a few briars that scratched it as well as me.

I have a Savage 24 S-E 22lr/410 gifted to me by my grandfather. I don't think he ever used it much. I have bagged quite a few squirrels and rabbits with it, and dispatched a few vermin around the house with it. It is handy but a little heavy. It will always have a spot in my safe, and If I happened upon a 357/20g model, I would probably snatch it up.

Yes, I've had a thing for combo guns; Ich hat Drilling und Vierling gern. Never owned one, but I have always wanted one. I looked at a Baikal O/U .30-06 at Cabela's @$550. Neat, but I really want a drilling. The Savages are great little guns; A couple of the 4-H kids over the years brought them for .22, one even tried the .410 for Trap.

Oh, yes, I know. I had a chance to buy a nice Mainz-made one in 16/16 over 9.2x74R for $400-and had the $400 in my pocket. But it was the rent money. So, my boss bought it instead. (We worked at a gunshop, and the shop wasn't interested) He cleaned it up good, (was found in a basement of a house just bought) and sold it for $1600, and the buyer was all too glad to lay that for it.

Always liked them but always ended up selling them off. My favorite was the Springfield M6 Scout. 22/410 Over under with the lever trigger.

Great Survival gun. Wow did they get stupid expensive though.

Had a Antonio Zoli 308 win under 12 gauge for a while. It was a little heavy and has been butchered by a scope rail.
Then a Savage 24 Camper, 22lr over 20 gauge, great loafing gun for wandering in the thicket. It was stolen in a burglary.
Now I have a Savage 24 F, 30-30 over 12 gauge, have yet to put it on paper.
Still looking for another Camper on the cheap. Was truly a practical hunting gun.

I had the "Camper's Companion" which was a .22lr over a 20 gauge and came with a soft takedown case. That went away a long time ago to someone who wanted it more than I did.

I have one of the new plastic Savages 22/.410's too, I haven't checked it for regulation yet, but I doubt Savage has fixed that problem with their combo guns, as it adds too much to the cost of them.
