Anyone here just flat out prefer a commander to a government size 1911 and use it for everything?

I use my Kimber Pro model for CCW only and the goverment sized Tactical Custom II for competitions and the nightstand on occasion.

Commander sized for CCW, my DW CBOB is my personal favorite followed by my fathers newly acquired Kimber Pro TLE II with crimson trace grips. Beyond that and for range guns Government all the way.

Commander (LW). Simply perfect. You didn't ask about the Star PD which is even more perfect. Seriously, the Government Model is just a bit bigger and heavier than it needs to be.

my first few 1911s were all Commanders, both LW and Combat, before dipping into the smaller Star PD and OACP sizes. i just thought the shorter slide made the gun balance, both in weight and proportion, better.

my most carried/duty .45ACP is the Sig 220 which is also Commander sized.

the only full sized 1911s that i still own are the ones being built up by custom smiths, because it's what they prefer to build on

I have long been a fan of the lightweight commanders, and I currently own a Springfield lightweight GI mil-spec. I prefer the lightweight models for carry but I have had a few problems with the alloy feed ramps getting beat up, which is one reason I bought the Springfield which has a feed ramp on the barrel.

However, I just purchased a Kimber micro 3 inch gun, and it hasn't missed a lick yet, so I quickly growing very fond of it, for a carry gun.

I'm a bit of an anachronistic dinosaur . I prefer the longer sight plane and balance of the full size SER. 70 complete with the collet bushing (often maligned) that is regularly replaced . I use magazines from the Marlin Camp Carbine as a first choice and Metalform as a second choice . I have made no modifications to the pistol other than a ramp polish and verifying timing and lockup . This weapon was given to me by my unit when I left active duty in '76.
I own and regularly shoot a somewhat rare .38 super lightweight commander that I just never got used to and hesitate to carry for just that reason . I have owned other commander sized pistols hoping to break the trend but all have eventually passed through my hands .
it is what it is :)

May be preaching to the choir here but, for me, it is a Commander all the way for EDC. I have a number of full size 1911's which I love to shoot but, for carry, it has to be the Commander.

Not me.

For concealed carry, the Commander is by far the better choice. Recently picked up and earlier 9mm one for that purpose. BTW, 9mm + Commander + Fun.

But for range, open carry, and HD, the full size is much better. If I were forced to get rid of all 1911 style guns except one, my "keeper" would not be any of the Commanders I have owned.

Commander rules in my house I have many more Commanders than Government I like balance of Commander and when I sit it doesn't bottom out and push up like my Governments Yes 3/4 of a inch makes a difference in carry.

Well, I'm 6'3", and I figure no gun is going to be absolutely comfortable, so the difference in slide length when carrying is negligible for me.

I like 'em both in the hand.

I only have one at the moment though; a lightweight commander with the horse on the side and cooper's list of upgrades, nothing more. That's my answer to the classic " if you only had one .45" question, FWIW.

I'm weird. I prefer the full length Government model. It just balances better to me. Maybe I'm just more used to shooting them. Here where it gets weird...

I'm building a Commanding Officer. With a Commander frame and Officer's slide, the whole thing balances better to me than either the Government or Commander model.

I prefer the. CCO commander slide officer's frame for carry. For pure target shooting I prefer the govt. Longer sight radius and better felt recoil reduction. I do own a CBOB which I love as a nice middle ground.

Honestly you can't have just one 1911 IMHO.

Funny,

Not just these boards, but everywhere, always seems that everyone prefers the Commanders.

Shops near me never seem to have them. They are always the full size or Officers.
