Compelled to clear the house...

Mortablunt, thanks for bringing up "slicing the pie". I was JUST reading about that in one of the NRA rags my buddy just gifted to me.

Very interesting, intuitive tactic.

I've also been looking up the NRA classes in my area. They're about $100.00 a class. I'm not rolling in cash, but it seems like very good value, since I'll get training and some pro-guided triggertime with my pistol.

(XD-9 tactical 5" with night sights, btw...)

Securing the bedrooms doesn't typically fall under "clearing the house". Going beyond securing the family quarters is where people fail to stay put and fort up.

I think I disagree with this. Unless you know for a fact that an intruder could not possibly be in one of the bedrooms, the "bed check" should be done in a tactical manner. As said, that might involve simple verbal signs/counter signs as opposed to an actual visual or physical search.

You've misunderstood.

Clearing the house = whole house

Securing the bedrooms doesn't mean you just waltz down the hall half asleep.

Exactly. As long as I can verify my family is safe, a BG can rumage in the garage all he wants until the cops arrive. I'm happy letting them cover that aspect of the situation.

Now if said BG decides he wants to wander down the hall toward the bedrooms, he will be met with armed resistance.

Agreed, hso...

Onward Allusion, thanks for the post. Kleenbore set me straight with a revised vernacular that I think Lee Lapin restated succinctly here:

Your list -

-Attending to the safety of the children.
-Assuming a defensible position
-Stopping any threat that I'm presented with.

- sounds as if you have begun a good home defense plan. The references above will help you finalize it.

That set of goals, is a very simple balance of self preservation, responsibility to family members and tactical common sense, as far as I'm concerned.

It also clearly omits the blunder as hso puts it of "waltzing" through the house. (which, embarassingly, is something I've been known to do. :))

Definitely a good start, anyways, and something that I can actually start practicing in the evenings.
