Concealed Carry Application Opinion

I am in the middle of completing my application for my CC permit in NC. They give you the option of providing/not providing your social security number. The app states not providing it will have no bearing on your application being approved. What's the general consensus on providing this on the application? Not that I'm a tin foil hat kind of person, just curious.

If my social is not required I don't give it, just out of general concern for identity security. DOB, name, and address should be plenty.

I'm in "Eastern NC" also and I did not provide my SS# when applying. I think my application took about 2 weeks to clear. Not a big deal because I had been issued an emergency permit prior to going through the formal process. I just prefer not to put my # on paper.

Here's who gets my Social Security Number:

Employer
Bank
Credit Card Company

Notice that I have monetary contracts of some sort with all of them.

Who does not get my Social Security Number:

Hospitals
Doctors
LEO Agencies (except employer)
Government Entities
Anybody Else

That's kinda funny. Except for the "Anybody Else", I would do just the opposite.

If you give them your SSN, it will be on the issued permit. I think the less places it's actually printed, the better, so I didn't give mine. Permit just says XXX-XX-XXXX on it. It didn't seem to slow anything down.

My wife and I have NC CCH permits.

We did not provide ss numbers and got our permits 60 days after submitting our applications.

I provided mine in TN and they DID NOTput it on my PERMIT.

Don't feel guilty or like you're making someone else's job harder. They know everything about you just with your address. In VA it's taken by the clerk of the circuit court. I did not give my social security number. The app. was processed without delay, problem, nor any questions or suspicion from anyone. They really don't care and accept your decision because they know it's the law. You have to remember that if you give the government the MINIMUM of what they need, they are happiest. If it's not required, it is not worth a low level bureaucrat's time or worry.

I have to chuckle about the comments suggesting that providing your SSN 'makes it go smoother'. In the last 2 years I've made about 7 gun purchases. I too thought that by providing my SSN it would make things go 'smoother' or 'faster'. Guess what? Every time I gave my SSN, I got delayed. So after about 3 times, I stopped giving it. Guess what? I haven't gotten delayed on the last 3 purchases. In general, I don't like the idea of providing SSN to ANYBODY, given the high incidence of identity theft nowadays. When you fill in the SSN on your form, remember that there will be copies of that form with that number extant for a long time after your purchase. If the FFL from whom you purchased gets broken in to, your personal info is right there in living technicolor for any thief to acquire.

What's the big deal, the government gave me my SSN, so they already have it.

Why make some underpaid clerical worker have to look it up?

Here in WV you are required to produce your SS card. At least in Wayne County. I don't know if it speeds things up, but my permit was back in 3 days.
