I currenlty live in Oklahoma and have had my CCL for over 3 years, I am looking at possibly moving to Ohio in the near future. Does anyone know what actions need to be taken for me to acquire my CCL in Ohio. I am assuming they do not just transfer the liscense, will I have to take new classes in Ohio and go through the same formalities all over again? Thanks!

freebird, I am a CCW instructor in the Columbus/central OH area. Yes, you will need to take the OH course. Currently, it's a 12 hr course required. 10 hrs. class, 2 hrs range. Take your certificate to the Sheriff's Dept and a couple other items, and depending upon which county, you should have your CHL within a week or two. It's been a very good experience for Ohioans, as the majority of our Sheriff's are very pro-gun, pro-CCW.

What part of the state are you moving to?

Thanks Linda! I appreciate it! Can I still keep my Oklahoma CCL as well or can you only have one per state? That is a pretty quick turn around. Here in Oklahoma we have 8 hours of training an about an hour of shooting. Do you know the approximate cost as well for the total classroom and background checks? I will be moving to the Cleveland area.

I'm not an instructor, but I do have my CHL. I'm sure you would be able to keep your OK state permit... in our class our instructor recommended getting Florida non-resident licenses as well, so I know you can have more than one, and some folks do.

My class cost around $180, I've seen them as low as $160. Background check, etc. cost me $45 IIRC, but the law just changed, and the fee might change as well when the new law goes into effect in March. That's $205-$225 total.

I picked my license up from the Sherriff's office a little less than 48 hours after my background check... and that's in downtown Columbus (Franklin Co.). Frankly, I was impressed at how quick and efficient they were during the whole process. I don't think you'll have much to worry about, and I think your transition should be an easy one, at least re: CCW, should you decide to relocate here. :)

Thanks to all of you. I appreciate it! I have also heard or read about getting the Florida liscense. Does anyone know what the benefits of this is?

That depends upon "if" Oklahoma issues out of state licenses. Example, Ohio does not issue out of state licenses. Florida, Utah, and a few other asssorted states do. So someone from your state or any other state for that matter could not get an Ohio out of state license. You must become an Ohio resident before applying for your CHL here. The benefits of an out of state, is more states that you would have reciprocity with, thus more to be able to carry in. I've taken the Utah class. It would give me an additional 10 states beyond the 21 I'm currently allowed to carry in on my Ohio.
