Condition One

I don't want to "open up a can of worms" here or to show my ignorance,but I'm new to semi autos with a hammer.I have a S&W Model 410s and I am wondering if it is safe to carry this weapon in Condition One (safety on,hammer back).
I have seen some people carry firearms in this manner and have often wondered how safe this was.

Not familiar with S&W semi-autos, but all of the "quality" 1911s (Colt and clones) are safe to carry in condition one...

Not with the S&W 410, which is a DA/SA pistol. When you engage the safety (which is also a decocker) on the 410, it will drop the hammer.

Single action pistols, such as the 1911, and Hi-Power, will allow hammer back, safety on. There are a couple of "odd ducks" like the CZ75 and the Taurus 99 that are DA/SA, but also allow single action "cocked and locked" with the hammer back and safety on.

If I'm not mistaken, that pistol decocks when the safety is on.

S&W does make a couple of their pistols with the safety on the slide that allow condition 1 carry...the 410 isn't one of them

Condition 1 is a method of carrying a single action semi automatic. Your 410s is a traditional double action semi automatic. The safety drops the hammer when applied so you can't engage the safety and leave the hammer back.

Double action auto's are best carried for self defense with round chambered, hammer down and safety off. When drawn the pistol will fire by simply pulling the trigger that will retract the hammer and fire the gun in DA mode with a longer and heavier trigger pull. The subsequent shots will be in single action. This makes the pistol very similar to a double action revolver for the first shot. No safeties to fumble with or to remember to take off.

Since there are passive safeties that prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin and the firing pin is blocked unless the trigger is pulled, the gun is prevented from firing if accidentally dropped or struck and is perfectly safe to carry with round chambered and hammer down. It is not safe to carry with hammer back and safety off. Like with all firearms, keep you finger off the trigger until you want to fire. If you want to take a deliberate shot you can manually cock the hammer and you are then in single action mode.

I think what I was getting at was firing in single action mode so as not to have the heavier trigger pull.

That would not be a wise policy.

I think I'll probably try like Steve suggested.Round chambered,safety off then
cock the hammer to have a lighter trigger pull.
