Confidence in your Carry Piece

i'm confident if i pull the trigger my px4 will fire. and fire again, and fire again, until the threat is neutralized.

No handgun can out-gun bad guys with rifles.

If there were such a handgun, that's what we'd issue to our troops in combat, instead of the M4.

Couldn't agree more, which is why I don't care to own hopped up handgun calibers. 9mm and .45 have been doing the job for many years. If I need more power, I need a long gun, not a more powerful handgun cartridge

Using that yardstick, I suppose someone could argue that if you "need" more power than a .380, you need a long gun, not a 9mm.
I adisagree. Unless you are hunting something larger than a human a 9mm or .45acp should do the trick. A .40S&W or a .357sig really doesn't do anything more than those two time tested rounds. The .357Sig and .40 S&W do offer distinct advantages when penetrating through windows and car bodies. However, they haven't really proven to be any better at stopping human targets.

Now if you are hunting large animals with four legs, then the use of a .460 S&W Magnum or .454 Casull maybe be needed to get the job done. Using the same rounds on two legged predators is not "needed" and could be overly excessive.

What can the Taurus PT-145 Millennium Pro do that the .40 S&W Walther PPS can't?

I carry several handguns that I have carried and I am 99% confident in all of them because nothing is 100% reliable. The best firearm made won't function with bad ammo, and all machines can break at any moment.

Nearly all the malfunctions I have had came from ammo issues. I have a CZ 83 that eats everything but Brown Bear. From some reason, the Brown Bear frequently stovepipes. I have a Mauser HSC that eats everything but Silvertips. They usually don't eject. I have a Colt Series 70 that gets insulted by mild ammo and refuses to eject it. Surprisingly, I have never had a malfunction in any of my 9x18 handguns. They all seem to like all steel cased Russian ammo.

I carry a G32 in the car, when I can wear a fanny pack, and on the 2 days it's cool enough here to wear a jacket. If I am wearing dress slacks, I carry a CZ83. I am confident in it because it always shoots where I intend for it to. When I can't wear a fanny pack or slacks I carry a P64. Due to the sights, it does not have the range the other two do, but up close and personal, it can deliver a lot of abuse in a hurry. I really wish someone made a green laser, or any laser, for it.

9mm is my cut-off. I won't use anything "lesser"

I feel equally as armed carrying a 9mm as I do a .45 ACP

If I lack confidence in my shooting ability with any gun I won't use it as a carry. It's taken me a lot of time and a few hundred rounds to get comfortable with my G-23. I also make weekly (minimum) trips to the range. There are 4 guns I take with me every time. The Kimber .45acp, G-23 and G-26 and the old S&W mod. 36. The rest I shoot just for fun.

Most CCW folks I know will tell me they prefer to carry (insert a weapon here) because they're comfortable and familiar with it, it carries nicely all day every day and it's never failed them.
I have 2 that I prefer: Sig P239 9mm because she's an old, trusted friend and a S&W Airweight .38 that I keep loaded with HydroShoks and wear in an OT Don Hume and I know all I need do is clear leather, aim and pull the trigger without wondering if I jacked a round into the chamber that morning before I strapped her on (us older guys are fortunate to remember where we live on some days :D ).

The one-eyed stare

Love my S&W m60 and my XD45. My ccw isn't just for bad guys, but for threats of the furry nature too. Rest assured, if I draw it, sump'n gunna die!

So how come so many police departments are dropping the 9mm in favor of the .40 S&W?

Actually more agencies are returning to the 9mm than to the 40 these days, by a small margin.

Any weapon I carry for fighting purposes has fired a minimum of 1000 rounds of factory ball without a Failure to Fire (FTF) and at least 200 of my carry rounds. IN 45acp that is the 230gr Gold Dot, and in 9mm it is the Cor-Bon DPX 115gr +P. I really like Cor-Bon. Been carrying them for over 20 years in my 9mm's.

9mm or 45 do it for me. I have fought with the 45acp and 38spl several times, and frankly didn't feel or see any difference in results.

Still ain't figured out a reason for the 40 S&W. Obviously some folks like them.

Right now as I write this my Colt Commander TALO Wily Clapp/21st Century model is about to go into my Milt Sparks. Most of my 1911's, SIG's, HK's, Glocks, M&P's etc have all been certified to me, for me, by me.

I feel alright with all my guns, including my revolvers. But because of my own experience with handguns, given a choice it will normally be either a 1911 in 45acp (90%) or an HK P30 LEM V4 in 9mm. I have a Full Size M&P certified but ain't been carrying it much yet.

If I am carrying it, I am confident with it, otherwise it would not be on my hip. Life is much to precious to risk with an unreliable firearm.

Go figure.

Fred
