Heart of Dixie!
Seeing as how this is the 100th anniversary of the Model of 1911, it is only fitting that every American should own one. I'm currently without a 1911 of my own (wife has HERS), so I am contemplating rectifying the situation. I have located (2) candidates for possible purchase. Both 1911s are USED.

The first is a Series 80 Colt Government Model in stainless steel. It is an earlier stainless gun with plain black sights and stainless steel trigger. I'd rate it as 90-95% overall. Price is $799, but is negotiable.

The 2nd 1911 is a very lightly used Remington R1. The gun looks absolutely NEW. Price is $599, and like the Colt, is negotiable.

I want a 1911 for CCW and general field use. My 'heart' says 'Colt'.

No competition between the 2 listed. Get the Colt. That said the price is a bit high. That is a good NIB price.

Offer $700 OTD tops but make sure that it if mods have been done they have been done properly.

The Colt is 'box stock'. I guess if I'm going to own another 1911, it needs to be a Colt. I kick myself for letting my last 2 Colts 'get away' from me (Series 80 blued Commander and a Series 80 Lightweight Officers ACP).

Remington r1's aren't that good. Especially next to a colt. I would rather have a para gi, ria and an American classic over an R1

2011 - 1911 Hey, I had the same idea need to get another 1911 in 2011. But there are so may good guns made today it is hard to decide. And the variations - 3", 4", 5" or 6" barrels - bushings, or bull barrels, - micro, officer, or full frames , stainless, blued, or a special finishes, - fixed or adjustable sights , etc. there are just too many choices. I found a used STI RangerII (classic commander size) , it groups nicely at 25 yards but 6" low. I am still looking for a keeper.

Colt or Remington, do either fit your requirements? How are the sights? Which options do you want to add or change? How much do you want to put into your choice to make it your ideal?

Colt claims the better reputation of the two you are looking at, but Wilson, STI, Bear, Springfield all make nicer products.

If you have to buy one of the guns you have located, negotiate on the Colt it will be the easiest to trade later on, or decide on what you want and keep looking.

Right now, 2011, 1911s are just priced , well, stupid. $799 for a used series 80 Colt, still rather have it than a $599 R1. For maybe $650 the Colt would be reasonable deal IMO. The Colt will hold value just on brand, the R1 is selling for more than it's worth, and it's value will just decline. For $800-$1000 bucks S&W, SIG, STI, SA make some of the best in this price range, and Colt has some too.

From the one example I've seen of the R1, the Colts have a superior fit and finish. Keep in mind, like I said, that I've only handled one R1. It could've been a dog compared to the rest of the R1s, but I somehow doubt it. And that's not to throw rocks at the R1, it fills a niche, but it doesn't appear to be in the same league as any of the Colts I've seen. The flip side is that it doesn't cost as much.

I had the same dilemma a month or so ago. I looked at and held many different makes of 1911, but bought a "100 years of service" Colt in .38Super and I don't regret it a bit!
