I'm interested in purchasing an original looking 2" barreled model 60-7 .38 sp. It has been modified internally for double action only. Is it possible to convert it to SA/DA? I'm not sure who modified it to DAO.

It looked to be in decent shape in the photo I saw of it. Is there anything I should look for when I check it out in person? They are asking $300 and I've been looking for a small revolver for pocket carry so I'm tempted, but I'm not sure about the dao.

Thanks

It can certainly be converted back, but exactly how would depend on what was done to it internally. There are a few different methods used when converting an S&W to DAO. It can be done by removing material from the hammer assembly, the trigger assembly, or both. So certainly either one or both of those components would need to be replaced AND properly fitted.

For the $300 purchase price + the price of returning it to SA/DA, you could find an unaltered Model 60 in mint condition.

So the real question is, do you want SA/DA? For pocket carry, the hammer is a hindrance. Also, many people feel that using SA in a defensive situation is a very poor strategy from a legal standpoint. The prosecutor will surely question that your life was in immediate danger if you had both the extra time and the presence of mind to cock the hammer before shooting.

If you do want a DAO pocket revolver, a bobbed-hammer Model 60 would be a good one, though.

I pocket carry a spurred snub nose and have never had it hang up on the draw. However, the hammer is just there for looks and the occasional long shots for fun at the range; all of my training is done DAO shooting. I agree on your first point, the OP is probably better off finding a revolver that does not need to be altered.
