Converting a USP 40 to a 9mm?

Plausible or impossible? Found some good prices on used full size USPs but in .40 caliber. I really wanted one in 9mm (and so did my wife) so can it be done? Or does it require too many (too expensive) changes to do? Thanks!

check out the sale boards at hkpro.com threre is usually a good selection of pistols for sale.

I would try looking there and at the various auction sites on the net before trying to convert a USP40 to a USP9. there are a ton of them out there, just wait for the right deal to come along.

I guess it could be done, but you'd need a new slide & barrel so you'd be better off buying the 9 if that's he one you want...not worth the hassle or expence of converting

Don't know about the USP, but in some models (Sigs, Glocks) it is possible, you will need to swap out the barrel, springs and magazines. Sometimes you can get away with just changing the magazine followers from .40 to 9mm. You may need to spend some extra $ to get a 9mm barrel fitted to the slide by a smith, if it doesn't 'drop-in'.

It probably isn't worth the trouble for you since just the cost of an extra 9mm barrel is more than if you just bought a USP 9mm outright.

Isn't there a slide conversion kit offered for the USP like that? I thought the problem was the conversion kit wasn't offered in the U.S.? The kit would include the slide, spring, and barrel. I think you have to look it up at www.heckler-koch.de

Thanks for the tip Tman, gave me more ideas to search and this is what I found.

The .de site lists conversion kits for both 9 to 40 and 40 to 9. But since CDNN is selling the .40 for only $400, I "suppose" I will just buy that one and buy a 9mm later if I really have to.

I was hoping it was just going to be a simple barrel swap like the Glock. I did find a Jarvis barrel to convert the USP40 to fire the .357 Sig round, but that is it.

Yep Its cheaper to just buy the 9mm Usp than to convert one.

If you can't find a nice USP9 used for $550 or less you're not trying hard enough.

Converting a pistol to a caliber with different recoil character and casehead shape may be fine for plinking at the range, but that's about it. It would be foolhardy to trust this pistol for anything but goofing around.

The manufacturer of the Glock .40 to 9mm barrels lists right on their catalog pages that reliability is not 100%, but it is good enough for practice.

The only dependable conversion in .40 is to .357 Sig. If you have the 10mm Glock, you can convert to either of the other two.

Bar-Sto offers a simple barrel conversion for some guns. (They make the barrel larger in diameter than the standard 9mm barrel to fit the slide properly, and adjust it so that headspace and extractor fit/function is not an issue.)

If Bar-Sto makes or can make one, that would be the cheapest way to go.

It might be cheaper yet to just shoot .40 s&w.
