Cook County Residents! 11+Rnd Magazines = "Assault Weapon", Turn them In!

BTW, it passed 15-0, with one Dem voting "present." 5 Republicans heartily approved this ordinance. The usual Dem-Repub blather does not apply here.

I am not aware of any true Republicans in Cook County. The Republican Party in Cook exists as a place for Democrat malcontents to go and run against the machine.

The Republican stronghold of Dupage County is no longer much of a stronghold. Between Dupage and the rest of the state we used to be able to counterbalance Cook County.

Oddly enough, NOT voting for a Democrat Governor when Poshard was running may have set our cause back to the point of no return.

Like many others here I am just hanging on as long as I can before my eventual departure to a more free state.

Until then we have to fight as best we can by trying to influence who gets on the ballot during primaries.

The referendum

For the record, the Cook County referendum that was supposedly used to justify this quick action and which passed with something like 84% support read as follows:

"For the health and safety of children and the entire community, shall the State of Illinois enact a comprehensive ban on the manufacture, sale, delivery and possession of military-style assault weapons and .50 caliber rifles?"

No bias there. Would you like clean air? Do you believe auto makers should be required to include seatbelts in every car? Given the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide, do you believe it should be regulated? Good grief.

I'm curious how it is that these pompous officials, whose safety is paid for with my tax dollars, think that I am so stupid as to believe that their taking away MY ability to defend MY person and MY family will somehow make ME safer.

IMNSHO, this disarming is treason, plain and simple.

"A man’s natural rights are his own, against the whole world; and any infringement of them is equally a crime, whether committed by one man, or by millions; whether committed by one man, calling himself a robber, (or any other name indicating his true character,) or by millions, calling themselves a government." — Lysander Spooner, No Treason: The Constitution of No Authority (1867)

"Gun control: The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her panty hose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound." — L. Neil Smith

Good luck you guys. You are going to need it...

OH NOES!!! The DEMS are coming    If this keeps up, someone is going to have to point out all of the repulicans that screwed us over too, looking at you Bush Sr.

Cook county (aka Chicago) has had a history of gun control longer than that of CA, so this is no surprise. They also have a crime rate that is much higher than average....go figure.

OH NOES!!! The DEMS are coming If this keeps up, someone is going to have to point out all of the republicans that screwed us over too

I cannot believe that either Jim Edgar(R) or Prisoner George Ryan(R) would have signed CCW legislation.

Heh. Try to follow here:

There are green balls and red balls. 80% of red balls have spikes. 35% of green balls have spikes. Green balls' spikes, when they have them, are shorter and more dull than red balls' spikes. All spikes are poison-tipped.

Now, you have to pick up and tightly grip either a green ball or a red ball, but you cannot look at it before choosing. So what'll it be?

(You get the idea. The "DEMS are coming" argument is quite valid.)

Goron, you are correct.

I cannot believe that either Jim Edgar(R) or Prisoner George Ryan(R) would have signed CCW legislation.

It was before I got really involved in RKBA but I believe it was in 1993 then Gov. Edgar would not sign a CCW bill on his desk. I am not sure if he vetoed it or just let it die.
Soon to be prisoner Ryan signed the bill that made carrying a firearm a felony. When Ryan ran against Poshard his political ads showed gangbangers running through the streets with evil looking rifels and implied that would be Illinois if Poshard was elected. Jim.

The previous ordinance was largely ignored by Cook County residents. Many didn't even know that there was such a ban on assault weapons on the books since 99. I've never heard of any instances of its enforcement, but the ordinance was often bantered about in hushed tones. This ordinance is far more expansive, with the potential to create criminals out of thousands of lawful gun owners, yet is still relatively unknown. News coverage makes no mention of the magazine ban, and only mentions a "tweak" of the existing rules. Quite the understatement!

What is stunning is that a entire class of previously legal items, which alone pose no more danger than a stone, is deemed contraband, and "they" have successfully swept it under the rug. There is an ultimatum stating that residents must surrender/sell/move their currently legally possessed items in 80 days, and no one knows about it. Gunshop owners in Cook County weren't even aware of the ordinance when I called them! Are they releying on Cook County residents to sense these new restrictions by extra-sensory perception? This ban is ostensibly an ordinance aimed specifically at weapons dealers, yet the weapons dealers were not informed. How are they expected to comply? Is it an affirmative defense that the ordinance was not made public?

My personal situation is extremely frustrating. Due to exploitive gerrymandering, my village is actually comprised of Dupage, Kane, and Cook counties. As one of the unfortunate populous of the Cook portion, I can be fined or imprisoned for posessing an item that is legal a few streets over in the same village! :banghead:
I realize that geography is the basis for what comprises any local government, be it state, county, village or city, but how can a judge enforce a law that gives prison time for an innocous object which is illegal to possess in one location and lawful one hundred yards away? Is this still America?

I have been keeping my guns in Will county at a friends house already. I am just getting so tired of this crap. I cannot wait to move to a free state. I dont consider IL to be America anymore. At least Cook county.

My advice, get out will you still can. I grew up in downstate IL, much different than Chicagoland, and I will not return until the state becomes a "free state" again. Silliness, the Chi-towners think they know what's best for the state:banghead: Stupid SOBs...:cuss:

I always wonder how they would handle say a 10-round XD .40 mag that only holds ten of the .40 but twelve of the 9mm. Interestingly enough, a zealous prosecutor could go after you for even an old mag that you could conceivably cram an 11th round into. Howabout, if you use the 1 1/2 inch Aguila shells in a shotgun that normally would take only seven of the regular shells? To make things worse, the folks writing the laws have little technical understanding of the product they are trying to regulate. :banghead:

It continues to amaze me at the erosion of our individual rights in this country. What was legal yesterday is illegal today all bases on some decision by a group of elected officials that have little or no understanding of the technical issues involved nor any concern for the opinions of the public. Ex post facto law is part of the constitution. It is specifically prohibited. This has never stopped any of our politicians but there was a time when the courts would put a stop to this kinda' crap. Of course now with the new legislative judges making, bending and breaking the law from the bench what can we expect? While something like this should be overturned by the courts I wouldn't bet on it in IL.

I would normally be shocked except for the fact that it's happening in The Peoples Republic- Fortunately I live across the Mississippi in a free state- I feel sorry for our brothers in captivity but other than that I don't give a rat's patoot for that whole damn state-

Its a shame that decent folk have to suffer due to stupidity and ignorance. I was in Chicago ONCE, and I've NEVER felt bad for not going back!

Perhaps all of the gunowners that value freedom and THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS over hypocrisy and lies can move out then let all of the Anti 2-A morons move in from all over the country! Then we'll see how long their version of "Shangri-La" endures!

The only other thing to do would be to sue in court! Unfortunately, it might be impossible to find a lawyer with guts and a spine to defend gunowners! Even if a good lawyer was found, its still likely to be a problem trying to have a fair and impartial trial in CROOK COUNTY given the current political climate.

Well as a resident of the enlightened county I feel safer. Criminals are already turning them in. Children are now smiling and playing in the snow.

Just yesterday I saw a rainbow. And a unicorn running through the field near my house. Luckily there was noone to shoot at it with an 11 round magazine. Cause you all know unicorns can survive 11 rounds but not 12.

And then when I walked up to the mall the lollipop children were singing and maidens were dancing. It was wonderful... thank god there were no gun owners with evil black rifles waiting to do them harm.

I strongly urge all of you to come to Cook county and enjoy the wonderful existence we have created. Why just yesterday my fairy god mother came and told me that the stars were going to twinkle just for us Cook county residents.

Mayor Daley and all the wonderful people who call Cook county home wish for all of you to come here and have hot chocolate with us during this upcoming winter. Dont worry their wont be any guns sporting "high capacity magazines" to harm you... except the ones in Mayor Daleys bodyguards possession.

Cheers.

Tecumseh (Now in a safer, happier, AWB free zone.)

I posted earlier about having to appeal until out of the influence of Cook.
Since it's a county ordinance, would one be able to start the process now, or have to wait until the day it takes effect, or have to wait until given a citation? Either way, it'll be a long and costly affair. The funny thing is I was unable to find mention of the ban on ANY other RKBA (NRA, GOA, CCRKBA, ISRA, ConcealCarry, 2ndAmendFoundation, JPFO, etc.) site, other than ICARRY; gonna be hard to fight a state AWB when the majority of the state's population lives under an existing AWB and is indifferent...

Comply or move out of Cook: it's the same to them, they win without a fight.

Disobey without being caught: they get "for the children" points, "we" get "pry it from my cold dead fingers" points, nobody else cares.

Disobey and get caught with, say, ONE full-cap mag: I'd expect a County police search (with CAGE advisors, of course) which means everything gets examined and logged, probable confiscation of all semi-autos & magazines for leisurely examination, plenty of snide remarks, entire residence tossed, etc. Even better if they detain you at your job for the search - because it's highly likely most of your coworkers voted for the ban in the first place. That'll look good on your resume...

I highly doubt door-to-door CAGE raids, at least for now. It's just like the handgun ban in Wilmette & Hale DeMar - don't ask/don't tell, don't get caught. If caught, public demonization & a slap on the wrist.

LOL Tecumseh.

In case you're a fast reloader, though, I think I know a good unicorn taxidermist.

Tecumseh, I actually walked to work today without having to run from cover to cover to avoid the gunfire. I passed an alley and noticed a would-be rapist apologizing to someone behind a dumpster. "You know, you're right," he said. "'No' does mean 'no'." People were taking the bars off their windows. The police were walking around with nothing but whistles and nightsticks, but they'll never need them. I heard that the open air drug markets in Rogers Park were selling discount prescription drugs to seniors. No one was eating foie gras. People were digging out parking spaces for strangers. Assault rifles were being melted down in Millennium Park to make...and you're not going to believe this...a big, beautiful blued Bean. It is a beautiful day, and it's only going to get better.

Is Bill Ruger rolling over in his grave?

Bill Ruger went on national TV years ago talking about how no decent gun owner needs more than 10 rounds in an attempt to save his company's Mini-14. Now look what you get--no >10 rounds, and no Mini 14.

On the bright side, you Chicago area people have one big advantage over California--you can just move a county away and get most of what you need if you legal fight fails. You can keep the same job, all the area people you know... geographically that is much easier than moving out of California.

Particularly vicious with this law is the no muzzle brake on semi-auto aspect. What is next, no shoulder pads?

See how wonderful Cook county has become? It must have been the same alley where Lady and the Tramp kissed over a pasta dinner.

Why just yesterday the birds were singing a love song for a lucky couple walking down the street. Did you see the elves building toys for the children? And I read in todays paper that some of the gangbangers are now reading for the blind. And I got a hot date for the unicorn races on Sunday. Afterwards some of the local muggers are going to serenade people for pocket change as they walk down Michigan avenue.

Seriously though it was very sneaky of them to tweak the law. It really irks me because there was no point in it. All of a sudden something became illegal overnight.

Imagine if they did that with black shoes? Just suddenly all black shoes over size 10 are illegal. Or if beer was outlawed, what would happen? Especially if they didnt tell anyone. It pisses me off that they just do this kind of stuff without telling anyone about how they are changing the law.

ok, stupid question here, but why would cook county need an AWB if all guns are pretty much outlawed up there anyway?

Just about everything is illegal in Chicago proper.

Cook County also includes cities and unincorporated areas adjacent to the city.

This effects those surrounding areas.

Cross Countyline Rd into Dupage County and there is little to no restriction on what you can own as long as you have a FOID card.

Edited to add: the above statement isn't entirely true, no full auto or silencers in Illinois for us serfs.

When I was at Chicago-Kent, my Con Law professor (1st semester, 2d year, so fall of '93) said something that I remember to this date, "The more unenforceable a law over a fungible thing is the more it hurts the law as a whole." He was talking about (alcohol) Prohibition but I was thinking of the AR15, shotgun and 2 pistols that I had in my apartment in defiance of Chicago gun laws.
