Could be worse I guess...

BOISE -- A first of its kind survey of gun storage in homes found that nearly two million children live in homes that have loaded and unlocked guns.

Project ChildSafe is designed to put gun locks in every home in Idaho.

More than 30,000 of those children live here in Idaho.

The study was published by the Pediatrics Journal. It's considered the first comprehensive study on the topic and it's catching the attention of Project ChildSafe, a national organization run by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The group's sole objective is to educate children and their parents about gun safety.

A representative of the group today kicked off an Idaho tour to spread the message.

Project ChildSafe was set up to educate families about the dangers of leaving a loaded weapon where small or untrained hands could find it.

"Children are a very curious and guns have a certain lure to them," said Lt. Bob Stowe, Meridian Police.

Lt. Stowe says the story is far too familiar, there are children and teenagers killed every day in this country, playing with guns. Thousands more are injured, deaths and injuries Stowe says are completely avoidable.

"Every one of them is avoidable as long as you take the time and put the effort in to making those guns safe," said Stowe.

Stowe says the solution is simple and free. These gun locks being distributed by Project ChildSafe keep a weapon secured and unable to be fired.

But not all gun owners are heeding the warnings. A recent study released by the Journal of Pediatrics shows there are more than 30,000 Idaho children living with a loaded firearm. And 17,000 of those live in homes were the guns are not locked or secured.

"It’s very frightening. It’s very alarming and it tells me that more education is needed and obviously more gun locks are needed," said Stowe.

It is something Project ChildSafe administrators hope to accomplish, one demonstration at a time.

"When we finish this tour, we will have distributed over 265,000 gun locks in the state of Idaho," said Randy Lamb, Project ChildSafe.

Law enforcement officers are asking gun owners to do three things with their weapons -- unload them, lock them and put them in a safe place where children can't get to them.

They say not doing that can not only prove devastating, it can also be criminal. If a child is killed or injured with your firearm, you could face criminal charges.

Funny, I don't remeber any stories where there ahve been any kids accidentaly shooting somone here in Idaho in like the last 10 years. You would think from the way htye protray it, 17,000 kids should be dead this week alone. Funny how a little discipline and kid controll can keep kids safe.

My girls knew better than to bother daddy's guns (or anything else). There was always at least a loaded rifle leaning in the corner by my bed.

And any kid over about 13 or 14 should already know how to shoot safely and have access to a gun if they should need it when parents aren't around. (remember the Carpenter's in CA :( )

The leftist extremists are patiently paving the road toward a declaration that firearms are a national public health problem. Can you guess what their "solution" to "this terrible crisis" is going to be?
