Hi there a friend and I are wondering if there might be any one around central ohio with some land that would be safe to do some plinking on. We would be willing to pay some thing to be able to shoot out there as right now the gun range costs are killing us.

In Central Ohio there are parks that have shooting ranges, for example Delaware State Park has a range on SR 229 just east of US23 that has a 100-yd rifle range, a pistol range, archery, and a trap/skeet range. You need a permit to shoot there but you can either buy an ODNR annual for $24, or a daily at the gun shop in Norton, just West of US 23 on 229. Not usually terribly busy except on weekends, no amenities except a port-o-let, bring your own targets/stands etc. There is a ranger on duty during operating hours, all you do is sign in, he checks your pass, good to go. Only real restrictions are first come, first served. If it has been rainy it's a sea of mud. No rapid fire (More than 1 sec between shots) and no "trash" targets (No TV's, etc).

Web site for ODNR shooting ranges:

Thanks we will check that out. Have to see if the operate year round though.

Also trash targets can be fun so we will keep this going in hopes some one might have some land. Just for the record we will clean up after ourselves.

Thanks for the ODNR link. I am in SW Ohio (Fairfield). I have been shooting at Targetworld but there is nothing like shooting outdoors. I have been told of a club (Fairfield Sportsman) but you need two people to reccomend you and I dont know any members yet. If anyone knows of a place in SW Ohio. I would gladly pay to be able to shoot and would leave nothing but footprints when I was done. That was all I asked of people when I used to let them shoot on land I once owned in Oxford Ohio. I never had a problem.

TIA

ScotZ, welcome to THR. Check out wwwmiamirifle-pistol.org. That's my club and I highly recommend it. I used to belong to Fairfield several years ago. It's a nice club, but they cater mostly to trap and skeet shooters. As far as I know, their rifle range is still closed as well. I may be mistaken on that.

I'm in Champaign County, which is two counties west of Columbus. I have a few acres you can plink on. At no charge. :)

Ah, Ohio DNR. I don't know if it's PC or lack of thought creeping in, but there's no place on the ODNR website that mentions target ranges, despite the fact that they run at least 2 full sized one.

re: plink this summer

I agree. I have to run, but when I get back if no one has already, I'll start a new thread for a spring/summer shooting get together in Ohio.

We should definately do a Spring Shoot - that would be cool. My range isn't big enough to host that many, but I'm sure we can find a place that's not on the extremeties of the state that would work.

Briar Rabbit in Zanesville used to be a great place for such a shoot, but they've limited non-members to the pistol range so that's out. I also belong to a club just north of Columbus that might work, but I'd have to get permission to host something. I'll look into it.

Wow... cool thread - I've been looking for somewhere around here to shoot outdoors. If only I'd asked a year ago... :banghead: :D

If there's an Ohio get-together for a shoot, count me in.

Count me in.

As far as central ohio plinking goes, there's also the pickaway sportsman's club, in circleville. you can join the club at the indoor range in lancaster for $100. There are usually inexpensive, unadvertised "sportsman's clubs," scattered all through the outlying counties. There's one about 3 miles from my house (Near McGuffey, OH) that charges $20 a year. No silly "rapid fire," restrictions. My dad and I do a lot of our cowboy practice there. Usually draws an audience. People think they are hearing a machine gun, stop, and see peacemakers and yellow boys. :what:

New to columbus

Count me in. I am new to Columbus and have only shot at Delaware since I moved 4 month ago. My old outdoor range is a 3 hour round trip drive. Not only am I in for a High Road shoot I would be in for meeting with the central OH THR members. Getting everyone together before hand may help with planning a shoot too. Just a thought.

I'd be up for a shoot. I work Saturdays so if it's on that day I'd need about 6 weeks notice to ask for it off. My wife and I go to the powder room in Powell to shoot pistol. We go to deer creek for rifle.

Regarding the proposed Central Ohio plink-fest, it would be cool if we could come up with a private property location, versus a public range. Many of the rural townships (I believe) have few if any restrictions with respect to discharge of firearms on private property. I'd be willing to pitch in with some spinner targets. Obviously, the location would have to be relatively population-free, and a nice natural dirt mound as a backstop would help. ;) Also, if we have an experienced (Ohio THR member) rangemaster, that would be nice as well. Just some food for thought.

I'm interested.

I also have a couple of old computer monitors and other goodies to sacrifice to the cause, if we meet in a rural location...

Licking County here...
