country plinking in central ohio

The range I go to is a smallish one, but check on the big dirt mound backstop. Or, If someone has a better idea, I drive for a living, so anywhere in Ohio is in range (pun intended) for me. tell me when, tell me where. Tell me format. I'll pack up the arsenal and be there.

Count me in

I'm in, though I need two weeks notice. Or new excuses to skip work. :D They've heard all of my good ones. My friend Keith would be in like a shot, but with the baby on the way, he might not be able to. Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Construction.....Any season is good.

I have two possible locations that will work, both just east of Columbus - centrally located in the state. One is a huge farm but I have to firm out some details with the land owner about it before saying yay or nay....mainly working out what's behind his property as the backstop is a rolling hill so overshoots are not likely but possible (think Bulletfest if you've been).

The other site is my range, which is a more structured range but I'm limited to how many folks I can host, so for that I'd probably be maxed out at 25-30 people. The range is actually quite large, but the firing line is not really wide to support a whole giant gang of people setting up spots. I've hosted 40 people before (kind of pushing it), but you have to "step up to" the firing line, not camp out on it. The good thing about my range is, it's 3-D so there we could run action shoots or have an informal match quite easily if folks are into that.

Depending on those two variables, I may be able to play host to an event. Not promising anything, but I'm working on it.

Swingset, sounds good. I applaud your efforts. I couldn't pull off anything like that at my club. All of the farms I used to shoot at are now surrounded by houses, as well. Anything I can do to help, let me know. And the rest of you Ohio shooters, let's keep the enthusiasm alive!

PS. You're the same Swingset I see post over on ARF.com, right?

We have gone to the steel plate shoots at Tusco Rifle Club in the past. It's a huge range with covered areas and a snakbar for hot food and cold drinks. You can shoot ANYTHING you own up to and including full auto. They usually set up on three ranges and have a bit of over lap. Shotguns with pistols, pistol cal carbines with rifles, etc. Range fees were $10 for each range for all the shooting you want to do. All skill levels are welcome. Safety is the only must. We could have 50 people show up and not even be noticed. You don't need to be a member to shoot during one of the open shoots. Memberships are around $100 the first year and $50 after. Just a thought.

Both just east of Columbus eh? Sounds like a short drive for me!

I like the farm idea as we could shoot whatever targets we bring as long as we clean up afterward (I have these old computers, see... )

As for the range, that could be cool as well, if the farmer says "nay". We'd all have to kick in to pay our share, obviously. Of course, you might offer to pay the farmer something to sweeten the deal as well, which I would think we should help out with if that ends up being the case.

Depending on the range they might not allow steel-cased or steel-core ammo, which is a bummer as I have some Golden Tiger that is begging to be shot.

Regardless, with a group the size we're looking at the coolest part aside from just meeting everyone is the opportunity to shoot other guns that people have. I know not everyone wants to let others handle their guns, but I think the opportunity would arise in this sort of social situation for those that are comfortable with the idea. Politeness and respect would obviously be expected...

Good work on trying to make this happen.

Mohican: Who are you asking?

Licking County here, think Denison...

There is a 400 yard range that a co-worker of mine shoots at near Zanesville that is very nice. We went there yesterday as his guests, had a fun ole time. They have a sheltered pit, with drop down stands. You can have someone under the shelter changing targets and FRSing corrections back to the firing line, which is VERY handy.
I'm still trying to get the info to join the club that owns it.

And I am DEFINITELY in for any Central Ohio gathering!

Swingset: Me too! Howdy neighbor! :D

Ahh, it's a small world...

Wow... lotta central Ohio THR members... nice! :)
Looks like this might actually get pulled off...

I've been intrigued by the thought of these local ODNR ranges. I plan on getting the annual permit when they open up again.

Some farms will let you shoot as much as you want, especially during the summer months when it starts to be bean and hay season. Some farmers will even pay you.

round here,north central

Theres several indoor places that charge to shoot, I dont care for them. The air quality makes my eyes burn after half an hour. The coon hunters club outside of crestline has a range but charges fees for a yearly membership.Theres no fast shooting allowed there but the ponds are stocked with trout.conservation league also has a small range.I go to a farm and shoot,no range fees and it has a natural backdrop of hills 50 ft high on 3 sides.

farther south, never tried the delaware places but have tried all the indoor spots.expensive and crummy ventilation.

The Grand River ODNR range (near West Farmington in NE OH) will allow full auto as long as it is kept to 2-3 round bursts with a 2-3 second pause between bursts. The ranges for the targets are fixed (IIRC, at all ODNR ranges), however, so nothing between the firing line and 25yds, 50yds, 100yds, and whatever the other distances are at other ODNR ranges. They do, at least Grand River, allow .50BMG.

(I regularly go to the Grand River ODNR range as it is a bit closer to me than Tusco.)

Don't know about you guys, but if it had to go down at an ODNR range, I'd prefer to stay home. I can't stand the places, between the "no fun allowed" rules and hapless Fudds that swarm the place, it would not be something I'd be into. Those ranges are really meant for sighting in your gun, and that's about it.

I can host the shoot, no problem, I just have to work out the details between now and spring. I will run it with safety in mind, but you can bet that full-auto will not only be allowed but encouraged!!

;)

Central Ohio/Licking County here also.:p

I will vouch for Swingset's private range. It's awesome!!! We were there for a machine gun shoot last year. I was thinking there too when this whole thread came up, but wasn't my place to suggest it. Now that Craig has...,don't let this one slip by people!!!:D

I'm in the Akron area and would love to come to a plink fest.

And coincidently, I have my very first Garand ever, that needs some range time.

I'm still up for hosting it, but we'll have to pick a date that's later in the spring I fear. The path that goes to my range is wetter than it's ever been, completely impassible by car right now. It needs to really dry out, then we're good to go.

I'm shooting at the Grand River range every Sunday that is over 50°F and over 40°F if not raining/snowing.

swingset

Where is your range? I live in Licking County and am a member of Briar Rabbit. It would be nice to have a range a little closer to home.

I'm near Granville, but it's just a range I built for my own uses. I host shoots and matches, but I'm not equipped for business on it.
