Couple of new "tactical" Remington shotguns ... 870 and VERSA MAX.

I shot a couple of rounds of trap last week, one with a VERSA MAX Synthetic and one with a Benelli Super Black Eagle II. Neither shotgun is a trap gun but I would choose the Benelli over the VERSA for general duty.

I'd be interested in knowing why. I've found the Benelli to be lighter.

Yes, the Benelli is more svelte, feels better balanced and points more naturally. Recoil wasn't significantly different between the two but then again I was shooting typical trap loads rather than 3" 00 buckshot or similar. The triggers were very similar but overall the Benelli felt quick and minimalist (no extra baggage) whereas the VERSA felt a little clunky and "fat" and didn't point as well. The Benelli is easier to clean too if that's important to you. Given that these shotguns are similarly priced, I'd buy the Benelli even if it's a few hundred dollars more.

It's possible that an M4 might be a better shotgun than a VERSA MAX Tactical, but with such a significant difference in cost and so many similarities between the two shotguns, I didn't feel that it was worth paying twice as much to find out.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I totally agree regarding the Benelli vs Remington tactical guns. I've no interest in the recoil-operated M2 and the M4 is just silly expensive considering there are capable autoloaders that can be had for significantly less money, as you've noted.

Yep, I have ZERO regrets with the VERSA MAX Tactical. As I mentioned, I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality. Even the magazine follower is a fancy aluminum variant ... a nice touch. All in all, I would have no problem recommending the VMT. I wish Remington made a 20 gauge version with an 18" barrel for our female friends and companions.

1858, is it possible the bennelli shot trap better because it was not a 'tactical' variant like your versa max? Just curious what you think.

BINGO ;)!

Years ago I wanted a brand new Chevy Corvette but just couldn't see spending $30K+ with a new mortgage, ***marriage etc...I settled on a Chevy Camero which literally had the very same engine and sporting capabilities absent "the corvette name" for $K's less.

Too me its analogous to the aforementioned M4 which would be my first choice followed by the Remington which "to me" essentially performs as well in every category.

***The kicker is the car and shotgun turned out to be the least costly of all as the gal I married bled me dry for years and the lawyers took the rest !

I shot a Benelli 24" Realtree APG model and a VERSA MAX 28" Synthetic model for comparison and not my Tactical version. Here's a link to the Synthetic model that I used.

The Benelli model can be found at this link.

The VERSA is listed at 7.7lb and the Benelli at 7.1lb but the longer barrel and gas system made the VERSA feel somewhat clumsy compared to the Benelli. The oversized forend on the VERSA added to the bulkiness of the VERSA too.

Sorrry I can't up your round count. There's still a Beretta A400 on loan here I need to shoot some more before writing it up and sending it back....

I on the other hand would LOVE the chance to try the new Versamax! I have no problem with paying shipping if you'd like me to put it through its paces....

I took a shotgun class from Costa this week, and one of the guys had a Versamax. He thought it was great.

Enjoy the gun!
