Woman injured with BB gun, police say

By Brad Zinn/staff • [email protected] • July 16, 2008

WAYNESBORO — Two armed robbers were beaten by a mob early Tuesday morning at the Mountain View Apartments after they broke into a woman's residence for the second time in less than two hours, Waynesboro police said.

Michael Seifert, 19, of Waynesboro and Blake M. Via, 18, of Stuarts Draft each are charged with armed robbery, abduction, malicious wounding and breaking and entering.

Police spokesman Sgt. Kelly Walker said authorities received an initial call at 3:11 a.m. from an 18-year-old woman who reported two unknown men had kicked in a door and entered her apartment. As the woman peeked around the corner, the men saw her and fled, driving away in a white car.

Walker said police went to the apartment and took a report. About an hour and 15 minutes later, police received a second call from the woman stating the two men had returned, this time armed with a long gun and two handguns that later were determined to be BB guns.

Walker said the men forced the woman into a back bedroom, where she was shot in the leg. The assailants then ordered the woman out of the apartment. Walker said after the woman called 911 again, she rounded up a group of four men from nearby apartments "and the fracas was on."

When police arrived at the apartment complex, which sits across from Kate Collins Middle School, Via broke free from the mob, but police tracked him down after a brief foot chase. "We found the other one lying on the landing of the steps to the apartment," Walker said.

Walker said the two robbers were carrying a computer and a Playstation 3 when ambushed. Both pieces of equipment, valued about $1,400, were damaged during the ensuing melee.

"It was pretty wild," Walker said.

Police also found suspected crack cocaine and powder cocaine on the men, Walker said. Drug charges against the pair are pending forensic testing.

Both suspects were treated at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville for minor injuries and released. They are being held at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona without bond.

Walker said he the woman's skin was broken when she was struck by the BB. "I don't know if it embedded in her. The report didn't say."

Woman goes for help from her neighbors. Four guys do the right thing and the newspaper calls them a "mob" :banghead:

I have to say that this is my neck o' the woods, I know how a lot of folks are around here and how sick they are getting of the druggies and other criminals running around doing this sort of thing. I'm not condoning general vigilante behavior but wen folks get pushed up against the wall...well this sort of response shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone.

I do wonder if these pukes fully understand how lucky they are that all they got was a beat down.

Sheesh, I flew right by that one. DOUBLE :banghead: :banghead:

Hell I guess I shouldn't be surprised, I mean look at the title... "MOB BEATS UP two robbers". How about "Criminals find out crime doesn't pay"

If 4 people are a mob, I hate to see what they call 8 guys beating a tool theif on a job site.

Sure sounds like you're sympathizing with the criminals. Considering these ass****s were ROBBING the gal you certainly write your article as though she was ASSAULTING the poor little suspects. A little newsflash for you, if someone breaks into someone's residence and forcefully assaults them, anything done to stop the situation is completely justified. I hope your other articles show some sort of concept of right/wrong considering that the people who stopped this CRIME were referred to by you as a "mob" who "ambushed" these poor suspects. Can you smell the BS of the spin or are you so permeated with it that you don't notice anymore?

Typical criminal sympathizer.

They should see what I saw in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia... I bet it'll turn 'em green.

Public stonings are not for the faint of heart... or for numb-nutz like the author of this article.

I bet anything this guy is of the 'pacifist leftist' stripe.
If you are a true pacifist then if a group of punks were gangraping your wife are daughter, you would do absolutely nothing to intervene.
I don't know about you but I find that absolutely despicable.

I just wrote to the guy too... here is what I said.

> I just read your "news article" entitled... "Cops: Mob beats up 2
> robbers
> Woman injured with BB gun, police say".
>
> Poor little armed robbers, getting beat up by a few angry neighbors
> ("mob" as you so eloquently stated). Frankly, I think the cops
> should have let them finish the job.
>
> You are a despicable criminal sympathizer, and are no better than
> the scum you are defending. You should take that crap you call
> "news" back to the socialist wuss-hole at Berkley from whence it came.

Here is his response...

Uh, you're a bonehead. Show me anything about the article that is
inaccurate and then we can talk. Bye bye.

What's the problem?

Can't say I blame the reporter for writing it like that. After all, clearly the apartment-dweller in question deserved what she got. If she can afford a ps3 AND a computer all while living in a neighborhood where these poor guys can only barely afford to support their coke habit, I mean she's just flaunting it! I say these poor oppressed "robbers" deserve a medal for saving the gubmint the hassle of redistributing her wealth.

It is only vigilante action to determine a punishment and dish it out. It is in fact a normal historical duty of every citizen, existing long before we even had police in this nation to stop crimes in progress. You can stop them using the force necessary in most places, that does not include deadly force unless deadly force criteria is met in the crime.

If they proceed to threaten you with deadly force then self defense can become a legal option.
Though the courts will try to make it appear you went out intending to use deadly force so that can be a bad situation.

As long as they get thier day in court before a punishment is given it is not vigilante action. The term is often improperly used.

It is the right of citizens to stop crime in progress. Police are only a recent thing in most of America, and it was citizens that performed most arrests prior.
Police didn't displace the role for other citizens, they just are paid to handle certain duties full time.

KB, I got the same response from the reporter

"What are you talking about, bonehead? Show me an inaccuracy and we can talk."

Come on, boys, when you write something like "You are a despicable criminal sympathizer, and are no better than the scum you are defending" you're not going to get a positive response no matter how right you may be.

Perhaps a bit of tact might have gotten useful results?

My response

"You seriously can't see the problem? You phrased your article as though the victim was on the offensive. Don't you find 'mob' an interesting way of describing 4 (more than 3, less than 5, and definitely less than a 'mob') people coming to the assistance of a crime victim? Are you sympathizing with the burglars? Seems that 'confronted' or 'stopped' would have been a neutral statement instead of 'ambushed' as though the burglars were the victims. Feel free to take a dictionary (that dusty book on the shelf) and look up some of the highlighted terms I noted. I'm not doubting the 'accuracy' of your terms, just your targets"

"Mob (N): An unruly crowd of people."

Four people doesn't even qualify as a 'crowd' in a VW Bug ;)

1. a disorderly or riotous crowd of people.
2. a crowd bent on or engaged in lawless violence.

MOB RULE=NO BUENO. carefull what you with for mate. the french had the need to take back their country from the aristocracy and look what happened. heads getting lopped off of innocent folks.

I don't understand sympathizing with criminals either. If they don't want to play by the rules and respect other people, then they shouldn't expect to be treated as other people who do play by the rules.

Walker said the two robbers were carrying a computer and a Playstation 3 when ambushed.
Another "journalist" who flunked sixth grade spelling.

It's a-p-p-r-e-h-e-n-d-e-d ... that's what sometimes befalls crooks who are caught in the act.
