Recently, iv'e been looking for a good reliable, accurate, affordable handgun as my "nightstand" / "truck" gun as well as my primary SHTF handgun. I had been looking at Walther P1's, but I turned away because of the relatively low magazine capacity of 8 rounds and the fact that it was a little out of my price range. I Also looked at used Taurus PT92's. While it still has the same proven system as the Walther with a higher magazine capacity, it's still out of my price range of 300 dollars or under. Then I stumbled upon the Croatian PHP MV9 9mm. It has the same layout as the Walther P38/ Beretta M92 and a 15 round magazine capacity, and it's well within my price range, so I could use the rest of my money on ammo. Do any of you own these pistols? Are they reliable? How do they do on accuracy? How heavy are they? Does it have a decent trigger pull? Any advice / info would be appreciated.

I had a chance to shoot it and disassemble and reassemble it a few times, and I wouldn't recommend it. If you want it as an interesting piece of history or as a part of a collection, then yes, but for a nightstand gun - NO.
They were the first attempt at pistol making in Croatia and they do work, but there were new versions with improvements coming out every few months, so if you get an early model it might not be reliable (come to think of it, I wouldn't trust the later models either). Also, the trigger pull is heavy. Accuracy is so-so, it was made as a service gun.
I hope this helps...

When the blurb mentions quality issues and custom fitting

It's been described as the bastard child of a German P1/38 and a Beretta (think 92)

there NEVER will be any spare parts, and well, it's cool on the collectible standard, but for a shooter, you are much better served by a gun with a history and is well know, one you can either fix your self or through customer service. IN that range you can buy a Hi Point, Kel Tec, used smiths, or a HUGE number of milsup likes a Makarov or P64 etc.

For that money, I would suggest a CZ 82, best gun for the cash going right now.

I have one.
I bought it because it looked so strange and I had never seen one before.

I haven't shot it a lot but it's not a bad shooting gun, reliable and accurate enough.

If I didn't have a better gun I wouldn't be concerned using it as a nightstand gun.

Have you looked at the Ruger P95? They should be right near your price point, especially if you find a used one. Used S&W Sigma pistols go for less than that, too, and were right at $300 new before being discontinued a year or so ago.

I have no experience with these, other than seeing them in Southern Ohio Guns catalogues, but, at the low price involved, maybe you could buy two, which would both give you extra magazines and a complete parts kit (as well as an extra gun in a pinch).

I actually was going to get a CZ82 for a long time, but I decided that 9x18 mak doesn't have enough power for a primary self defense handgun. And there aren't many reasonably priced used Smith and Wesson Model 10's around here. Although I have been considering the Taurus M82.

I could think of a good many low-cost/high-quality pistols with proven reliability, parts availability, and the availability of customer service that I would select as a nightstand gun over the PVP-MV9.

In my opinion, you should be looking at the following pistols, all of which offer a high level of quality for a low price:

-SIG SAUER SP2022
-Ruger SR9
-Ruger P95
-Stoeger Couger

The EZ-9 is a pretty nice pistol. Serb military sidearm. I picked one up several months ago when CDNN had them for $299.00. It externally resembles the Sig 226. Internally though it is quite a bit different.

K-var has them for sale now, but at a quite a bit higher price (can't remember how much)

If you can pick one up for $300.00 or less, it should be a very decent buy.

Zastava has a long history of making solid, reliable, military firearms.

Given this is the same company that makes the Springfield XD, their props are there. I owned one and they are funky and indeed are evolved Walther's with the original Beretta-style safety. Mine was fine, odd but fine. The price on these right now is pretty good, though, and for self-defense and not shot alot these are a tremendous bargain. I imagine they can handle being shot alot all the same.
