I posted a video on YouTube showing modifications I made to an M1A stock. I covered the operating rod, made a fuller pistol grip, and made a removable cheek piece riser for scope use. I never liked the other cheek piece options, and decided to make my own, I am very pleased with how it turned out.

If you have an M1A and want another cheekpiece option for scope use, check the video out.

Nice video, and nice work on the rifle. I like the cheek piece more than the cover over the operating rod. That goes to personal preference though. The picture quality on your video is impressive. One suggestion I would give, next video, place the rifle stationary on "something". I nearly got dizzy watching the rifle flip all over the place. Though, that did give my optic muscles some much needed tracking practice. Anyhow, cool project! Thanks for sharing it with us!

I like the cheek rest a lot. That looks a lot more comfortable than the big fat adjustable height ones that wrap around the stock and push your head off center from the scope.

For those not wanting to take the time to view the video, here is a picture. I epoxied two sections of aluminum tubing into the comb of the stock. The cheekpiece has two 1/4 inch spring detent pins which fits into the holes in the comb. The spring detent balls fit into holes in the aluminum tubing.

Nice job with the stock sir.

Is the stock you used for this idea a USGI synthetic, or a SAI type?

That made for one very nice configuration. Very ingenious approach and made for a solid setup. I really like that. Creativity! :)

I did the same sort of thing and found it very helpful.
Mine is covered with leather, suede side up and painted on one side.

Averageman, that does look very similar. How is yours attached ? Fragout, I have not weighed the stock before and after, and do not wish to disassemble it now to weigh it, as I glass bedded the rifle and want to keep disassembly to a minimum. I would imagine that with the cheekpiece installed, and the other modifications, the weight difference would be less than half a pound. I just pulled the cheekpiece off and weighed it, it is 4 ounces, or one quarter pound.

I did the same posts as you, but I did not do the lining tubes, just made the cheek riser, filled it and covered it with leather, then added the posts.
I have only removed it once, and dont see myself doing it again, I just bought another stock, a "Big Red", refinished it and set it aside.

I had a removable cheek riser on my M-21... Two field dressings and some 100 mil-an-hour tape.:D

Yours is much nicer.
