I did a thing today, I bought a 22" 44 magnum CVA Scout with a Leopold vx freedom 1.5-4 lpvo scope, going to zero it at 50 yards with some 240 grain jacketed soft point and use it in the thick woods and brush as a short range deer/pig hammer

I have one of those. It is a little portly for it's small size but okay to carry. Great trigger, hammer a little tough to pull back like all rebounding hammers are. Accurate and good shooter for my backyard deer rifle and hog hammer:

Good choice of scope for that kind of gun.

Make sure you get some practice at 25, 75, and 100. Always good to know the slight shift at those ranges. 50 is a good zero range.

the low rings that were on the scope were just to low, no room to get my thumb on the hammer, I put a set of mediums on it picking it up about 3/8" and I moved it back about the same amount getting the eyebox a little closer to my head, now I need to go zero it 😀

I got the basic rifle, added my own optics. Best trigger on a cheap gun yet. Comparing it with my Henry for this years Illinois deer season.
Haven't got it settled down enough to hunt with it. Still a couple loads to try.

Congrats on a great find!

That scope is $300 on Midway. I already have a Scout in 44 mag, but I would sure as heck bought that one if I walked past it.

I'm going to have mine cut down to 17" and threaded. It will still be nice and short even wearing a suppressor.

Ya and I chose the better cheek placement over hammer clearance. That why they say to each there own

took it out to 100 yards, with the 4x scope i could barely see that 2" circle so getting it in with 2 adjustments was good enough, this was with a 240gr JSP Winchester 20231028_163249.jpg

What scope is that 3crows?

The one I had was laser accurate, I put a cheap red dot on it when the prismatic scope i bought for it had too short of an eye relief to work on the factory rail. They are very nice guns, and I wish I still had mine, but it payed for my rifle that became my 221 fireball. I will have another someday, and I want to shorten it up to 17" and thread it as well.

The scope is a cheapo scope I got at a gun show, Osprey brand, at well under MSRP. The guy said it was backed up for lifetime ;). But, I have shot the snot out of it and no problems, rifle or scope. It is a fixed power 2.5 on a one inch tube. The FOV is narrow, the glass is decently clear and shooting with both of my eyes open it comes to target quickly. I did not want a high dollars and huge zoom scope on my backyard, under 100 yards, deer rifle and truck gun.

I do want to cut and thread the barrel. I also may go to Warne QR medium rings since this rifle is a take down version and popping the scope off makes it even more compact. I have low fixed rings now and the hammer is workable but I would not mind a little more room for my thumb. I have fat fingers, lol. As good as the trigger is, the rebounding hammer is a little stiff. I hate rebounding hammers but for this rifle it makes sense actually to keep it simple.

I realize this thread is kind of older, but just wanted to ask if you guys were still happy with these rifles.
It looks like Arkansas is going to allow straight walled cartridge rifles this coming muzzleloader season, and this is what I'm thinking about. I don't want it in .45-70. I can't imagine a rifle that light with heavy .45-70 loads.
I have a revolver in .44 magnum and already handload for it, so this seems like the logical choice.

Y'all still liking these?

well i thought like you Ark. Paul had the 44 mag dies bought a 44mag Handi rifle. it was just ok. after about 80yds no bueno! i bought a used TC Encore in 35 whelen . very accurate to 100+ yds. sold
the 44 mag. I can form brass easily from 30.06.

Bull

Does the Arkansas rules include repeaters?

The CVA Scout is not a particularly light rifle. But it carries well and absorbs recoil nicely. I still like mine.

The 44 works well inside it's operating range without punishing recoil. These guns are a little heavier than you would think due to the barrel thickness. I've shot a 450 bushmaster in an ar pattern rifle and for me that was my recoil limit so I would be wary of a 45-70 if you don't particularly like recoil.
