CZ 550 Bolt question

The classic Model 98 action is a military design meant to be rugged and reliable, not silky smooth. The design promotes bolt wobble when open and close tolerances can make it feel "stiff" of "sticky" in operation. They generally do get a little smoother with some use.
+1

If you want smooth bolt movement get a Remington 700.
If smooth is important to you, get a Sako.

Fella's;

I've got a relatively recent 527 American. I can lift the bolt & tip the muzzle up & the bolt will easily slide fully open, giving a metallic clunk when it hits the bolt stop. My CZ 452 rimfire bolt is very much the same.

I don't have a CZ550 because they're not importing the left bolt version into this country yet. But, soon's they do, a 550 in 6.5 Swede will be mine.

Are you listening CZ?

My ZKK 602 is rough as a corn cobb but guess what my first choice big bear gun is? Why a .375 would have a 2 oz. set trigger is beyond me though.

a 2 oz. set trigger
Have you measured the pull weight and is it really that low?

Most 550 magnums are above 16 oz. (unset pull is typically around 3-4 lbs). I would have thought the 602 would be approximately the same. If your trigger has been adjusted to bring it down to 2 oz., I would check to see that the safety still works properly.

Too stupid to know we have been duped? COME ON MAN! Most of us attach a scope so the iron sights are useless to us. It has nothing to do with stupidity and everything to do with preference...

Uh, what are post are you responding to. :confused:

If I had to buy another new hunting rifle, it would either be a Weatherby or a CZ 550. I ended up buying a Remington M700 in .30-06 mainly because of brand loyalty and the fact that I wanted a turning bolt action as apposed to the controlled feed, Mauser action of the 550.

The 550 is much cheaper; I ended up spending $1000 on my rifle and scope. If I bought the 550, I would have gone with open sights and spent a couple hundro less.

Checking CZ's website, their prices have really skyrocketed. I was looking at around $600 shipped to my FFL winter 06/spring07. I would, however, still get a CZ.

Fella's;

I don't think that CZ's prices have risen all that much, I just think that the dollar is tanking against CZ's home currency.

You are correct. The problem is ours, not CZ's.

The only good deal for foreign trade is on Chinese dry wall. :D

I just got a cz 550 american in .30-06.

Mine behaves as the others described. When fully open and starting to push forward, it seems to bind.

I have noticed that if I "lift" hard on the knob while pulling back and pull down a bit on the knob while pushing forward it seems not to bind as much.

I have cyced it a few dozen times...maybe a hundred times or so. Not sure there has been an improvement yet.

I have not had the pleasure of shooting it yet. Somewhere along the line my scope rings got misplaced and they had to be reordered (at no cost to me other than the annoyance of not being able to shoot yet).

Glad to hear all the other positive feedback on this rifle.

Sorry if this sounds off-topic at first. My CZ 550 Safaris (.300 Win and .375 H&H) were slick as whistles. However, I had the same rough/binding issue with my Kimber M84 LPT .308 Win. The bolt would bind both when opening and closing. I oiled it, and it helped...some. So, next I took the bolt down, cleaned with to bare steel and used Barryhill Ultimate Gun Lube on it. Problem resolved! Slick as a whistle!

Give it a try.

All of mine smoothed out over time. They are quite smooth now, and I would not trade any of them for a RemChesterBy. The fit, finish, quality and durability are without peer.

Great rifles all.

I think possibly CZ got a taste of American sales, and then when the dollar tanked relative to the euro, the price stateside for these shot way up due to these exchange rates, reducing sales, so they had to find a way to cut corners, and (perhaps?) outsource the manufacture of some to keep prices down. Didn't help matters the gazillion new turnbolts that have come out in the last 5-10 years to compete with them (Mossberg, S&W, Howa, Stevens, T/C, Marlin, new F. N-chesters, etc.). IINM, their labor cost is pretty high in Czech Republic, so I wouldn't be overly surprised if they have outsourced.

PS. I love my 550s and 452s (fantastic quality for the price), but have not bought any in the last two years, so cannot comment on any recent alleged decline of quality or lack thereof. Oh yeah, I love my CZ pistol too.

The one beef I had with them was the plastic nosecap on my 452FS. It was replaced immediately with a steel one. $35. Yeesh! I would also like to get some steel magazines for that rifle, but it works just fine with the plastic ones...
