I've got some mad money and looking to add a nightstand pistol/range-tack-driver to the kit. I've long coveted a Kimber 1911 as well as a CZ 75. I was going to go with the Kimber but learned recently that the CZ comes in a .40 cal which I want to try (only have 9's and 45's right now) as a caliber platform but also satisfies the horsepower needs of a nightstand pistol.

From what I understand, both should be very accurate, so I'm putting it out there to see if anyone has good or bad stories about both or either that will help make up my mind.

Thanks in advance.

I'm personally not a big fan of the .40 but I am a big fan of both CZ's (have a P-01 and a P-07) and 1911's (have a Dan Wesson myself) and I don't think you can really go wrong with either. One thing I will say, if you are thinking of using it for a nightstand pistol, consider something with an accessory rail to put a light on. I have a Springfield XD45 Tactical just for that purpose. A good light can go a long way to disorient a BG. Sig makes a really nice light/laser combo at a really good price point. Just a thought.

I have a CZ 75 in .40 and can highly recommend it. It’s a joy to use and has been flawless. The platform and round work very well together.

Thanks for the quick responses!
Oasis - I have so many flashlights stashed in so many drawers - always keep my surefire combat in my pocket or next to my bed. I've trained and do practice using flashlight techniques so will probably be more comfortable without pistol mounted light for now - your advice is spot on though, for anyone considering self defense options, low light/flashlight training is the first thing you should do after whatever your most basic orientation is done.

jdc - thanks for the recommendation. I worry a bit about the .40 not being the 'native' caliber for the 75. Do you know how long it's been out? I just ran across it this week...

GojuBrian - any reasons for choosing the 1911 over the CZ? just your preference or is it a performance issue?

Thanks again.

Just preference. Either would be a good choice, but 1911's are inherently more accurate. On the other hand you give up round count.

For 9mm the cz75 it the best for me. For .45 the 1911 wins hands down.

I have read of some problem cz40's, but I've read of problems about pretty much everything out there. For he .40S&W I prefer the Springfield XD.

I'll take those points into consideration.
regarding internet problem reports - yeah, sometimes too much information is not a good thing.

I'm leaning toward the kimber anyway (and I will eventually have at least one of each of these I have no doubt), so may just pull the trigger on that, so to speak. Given that my light bulb idea of a CZ in .40 just happened this week (I'd coveted it in the 9), perhaps it warrants some more research (like the kind you get when you borrow from a new friend at the range...).

Thanks, all, for your input.

I bought my CZ 75B in 40cal. about 6 weeks ago and have put 650 rounds through it without any issues at all. Very accurate and well built.

My all time favorite is a CZ 75B in .40, but I have upgraded with the Kadet Kit for .22 and an aftermarket (EFK Firedragon) barrel in 9mm. No matter what the configuration it just plain points and shoots so well that when I'm leaving the range I'm planning the next visit when I can warm it up again.

it also is my cold season carry pistol, usually in .40.

Get the CZ

I have both Kimber Custom II and CZ-75b in .40S&W. Both are accurate and fun to shoot. The Kimber jams. The CZ does not. Get the CZ for serious jobs. The Kimber is a range only gun because I don't trust it for carry or night stand. --Stork

I shot a couple of Kimbers and I see no difference between them and my RIA (which means I'm the issue)

My CZ 75 B out performs every other gun I own

CZ-75B is my rec and if you can find it the SA (single action only trigger) version.

Got one. Very accurate. CZ used to make 'em with a plastic trigger (what the hell were they thinkin') but they've learned their lesson and now make 'em with a steel trigger.

Highly recommended.

I am a kimber man!

I have a Kimber Custom II Stainless .45ACP W/ Meprolight Tritium Night Sights. Kimber was my first gun and if I lived in a state that would allow C.C. I would trust my life to it ... I kind of already do as it is one of my home defense weapons.

From day 1 I have NEVER had any problems of any kind! No problems with the magazines, no jams, no failures to feed ... nothing! The gun has worked FLAWLESSLY and I am PROUD to be a Kimber owner!

I do have other handguns ... SigP250 & Taurus Judge ... but I am most comfortable and confident with my Kimber. She's my baby and I wouldn't trade her for anything!

Regardless of what you decide to get I hope you enjoy it and it serves you well! Take Care!!!

What a tough choice. I own both, and love both. How to you choose your favorite child?

Handle both, shoot both if at all possible. I don't care for the Schwartz safety on the newer Kimbers, but that's a personal thing. The Kimber trigger will be better out of the box, and be pretty inexpensive to improve, if it's even necessary. Almost unlimited options for the Kimber.

My CZ in .40 has been one of my few 100% reliable autoloaders. I have shot everything through it, from light weight to 220 gn lead slugs. My standard load uses a Missouri Bullet 170 LSWC and my CZ eats these like candy, thousands of them so far. Super comfy, reliable, accurate, well made, all steel, my all time favorite .40.

Man, that's a tough choice
