These are superb pistols. I shoot an SP-01 Tactical in USPSA Production division and I love it. It's a sizable pistol with enough weight to damp recoil (plus it's a 9mm, so very comfortable shooting).
Mine has never malfunctioned with either ball or JHP. Note: it does favor hot 124 gr ammo -- the stock recoil spring is heavy, designed for military +P loads. It'll work with wussy 115 gr WWB or other commercial stuff, but ejection can be weak. The brass clears the gun but it might bonk your head or arm.
Ergonomics are excellent. Though it's a big pistol, the grip area is not fat or blocky. Fits my hand perfectly and the sights align naturally to my eye when I lift the pistol. Also, CZs have a low bore axis, like 1911s and Glocks. This aids fast shot recovery and accuracy. For me, a SIG (very high bore axis) feels clumsy compared to the SP-01. Likewise, a Glock (awkwardly angled, blocky grip) makes me feel like I'm fighting the pistol rather than it complementing me.
The SP-01 is scary accurate. In competition I almost feel like I'm wielding a laser pointer or a paintbrush. If I slow down just a half-second to take a precision shot (e.g., an A-zone head shot on a target that's heavily occluded by cover or by a "no-shoot"), that bullet will go where I need it to go.
The sights are prominent and clear -- better than earlier CZ designs.
It is also a great nightstand/ home defense gun. 18+1 capacity (I load the mags to 18 and call it good), night sights, front rail for attaching a Surefire if that's your game. I stuff mine full of Speer Gold Dot 124 gr JHP+P law enforcement loads, which are a piece of cake to shoot in this pistol.
In short, the SP-01 Tactical rocks for action pistol competition, range fun, and home defense -- everything but carry, really (it's too big). Fortunately, CZ also makes an excellent 9mm carry pistol -- the P-01...
