Well Monday morning I picked up a new CZ Bobwhite in 28 Ga. This is my first purpose built small frame 28 ga shot gun. Shot a fair number of tubed or 4 barrel 12 ga over the years though. First the appearance, fairly nice figure on the butt stock and splinter foreend, finished in a low gloss oil? maybe. Checkering is not sharp but certainly useable. Wood to metal is tight but the wood stands a little proud of the steel. The psuedo casehardening and engraving on the receiver is reasonably attractive. Twin triggers are relatively crisp and I would guess 5 or so pounds. All told the shotgun is attractive with nicely blued barrels. The stock is a touch short for me (6'4" 240 #) but not obnoxiously so with a relatively light kicker like the 28. Should be about right once sweaters and jackets go on come December/January Woodcock and rabbit. Being a light gun the shot gun shoulders well and the comb height is about right for me. Being light it forces to consciously swing on the full deflection shots.

Now the shooting stuff...After a quick squirt of Rem Oil on the trunions and other moving parts in the action it was off to the back 40 for some target work. The ammunition was WW AA HS with 3/4 oz of 7.5 shot @ an advertised 1300 fps. First off I will say that the recoil while not bad was sharper than expected, my reference being 12 ga receivers with tubes or 28 ga barrels. The targets were hand thrown birds ranging from rabbits to sprining teal. I can claim a solid hit with the first shot fired from the shotgun. I was shooting with the IC choke tube in the rt barrel and the Modified tube in the left. By the end of the session I had fired 2 boxes of shells and had scored hits on approximately 2/3 of the birds thrown. All shots were taken from low gun. I can safely say that I did not miss anything I thought I should have hit and made some second shot hits with the mod barrel as well as some kills on the cripples and barely marked bird from the first shot.

Minuses on the shotgun...It would be nice to have ejectors or the option of them in lieu of extractors only. I need a new choke tube case to tote the tiny choke tubes.

Plusses....Seems like a good shotgun for a reasonable price. Shoots passably close to where I'm swinging. Is lightning fast and just plain fun to shoot and handle. I like the instant selection of choke options with twin triggers. The safety is not self resetting, my 12 ga OU skeet gun has the safety blocked.

After a good cleaning, barrells cleaned very easily, and some tetra gun grease on all the moving stuff action is somewhat smoother.

Thanks for posting this. Seems like a decent shotgun.

Note that it's much lighter than your tubed 12 gauge. That's a target gun, this is a bird gun and a pretty good one at that. Enjoy....

Try the Remington STS's. They patterned better for me, plus the hulls are better to reload. If you aren't going to reload (ie, if you are made of money) the Estates shot well also. If you are going to reload AA's, I have 75 hulls and boxes you can have.

Kudu sent me a nice safe recipe that works well in both my guns (870 and Baikal sxs). Lower recoil than factory, if that's possible, and nice patterns.

Your timing couldn't be worse! I just shot a 28ga in skeet last week and was incredibly suprised. My hits were exactly as consistent as my 12ga but the lack of recoil allowed me to see my hits better and get on target for the doubles easier. So now I want a 28ga and the CZ looks to be just in my price range and I'm a 28ga fan now for life!

Confirm on 28 ga. CZ Bobwhite

I've had the 28 ga. Bobwhite for a couple seasons now and am very pleased with it. It comes with 4 choke tubes (drats, maybe 5, can't remember) but with cyl and imp cyl it is very slick for skeet. Splendid to carry on a walking outing.

Recoil is mild enough for our kids to handle easily, but not non-existent. It's not a cheek-biter like some small gauge guns, all the recoil goes straight through the pad.

Stock is quite plain on my gun, but uniformly dense and no sapwood. Suits me just fine. Balance is near-perfect - very light but no whippiness because of its longish barrels.

There is some doubt in my mind whether the barrels are blued or coated. I've seen it described both ways. If it is blued, it is extremely well done.

Solid lockup and easy smooth opening. I'm actually getting to like manual extractors...a lot.

I haven't patterned it extensively, but early results show a very even spread.

It's going to get some use, because I plan to shoot the dickens out of it.

Brewster,

Welcome to the forum.

You do realize you responded to a thread that is 3 1/2 years old?

That being said, I have been looking at these CZs in the Ringneck in 28 & 16 gauge.

They are very tempting.

Yes, I noticed that...haven't heard much on CZs since they came out, so I chimed in.
