CZ-USA Vz.58 Review

Nice video, well done and informative. I particularly like the field strip and seeing how the rifle goes together, since I've never had a chance to see one in the flesh.

Can you comment on the availability of accessories and magazines?

Looks like a nice rifle, but it's a total freak, and way more complex than it needs to be. The main thing that keeps me from even considering one is its total incompatibility with AK accessories. There's a number of areas, from the AK side rail to the magazines and muzzle brake that could easily have been made compatible. I also think the AK gas tube locking system is far superior; I don't like the idea of a pin in areas that are constantly subjected to movement, impact, and vibration. It may be an okay gun in its own right, but I'll stick with my AK-based rifles.

You have to remember hat the Czech purposely made the VZ58 non-compliant with the AK platform...it was a small act of defiance in the Warsaw Pact

I really like the VZ58 and consider it the Ultimate CA legal black rifle...the open top makes loading a fixed mag very easy

It's not just the open top, but the stripper clip guide built into the bolt carrier that makes it so nice :)

I wish they kept the 7.62x45mm round for this rifle. :( How cool would that be.

Can you point out this complexity? I guess I'm missing something.

I'm a fan of the AK series rifles (I pick up a new Saiga AK74 tonight I hope), however the Vz.58 really is an improvement on the concept in my opinion. It's smaller, lighter, better built in most cases, just as accurate, and super simple to strip and clean.

I'm not sure I understand this statement. Do you not buy AR15's because they don't share any accessories with AK's? The Vz.58 isn't an AK nor is it a clone of an AK... That's like not buying a Chevy because it doesn't accept Ford parts. Well... that might make sense to some folks. :)

Spare parts are readily available, affordable, and of good quality... at least for now.

I really don't care about muzzle attachments. I don't try to dress all of my rifles up as an AK74. :) I think a brake would look out of place on this rifle as the original design didn't call for one. But if you do want to dress up the muzzle, you're right, the Vz.58 probably isn't for you.

The gas system is a proven design (short stroke). It's been proven in rifles such as the SKS and FAL. As for the pins, they're captured and detented. Good luck getting one to just fall out or even jarring it loose. :) Even if by some odd chance the piston cover fell off, it wouldn't effect the performance of the rifle. It's a non-required part.

True, and that's one thing I left out of my review as I don't have any stripper clips.

The open top design is outstanding. Coming from the AR15 where certain malfunctions are nearly impossible to clear quickly, the Vz.58 is quite refreshing. With the bolt back, you can see everything inside the action and easily clear a malfunction should one occur.

The bolt design is one area of complexity. The multiple parts to the bolt, and steps required to remove it from the carrier. The spring and trigger group layout is another. Not denying it's a good rifle, but it's weird and has some aspects that, to me, make it less desirable than an AK.

It has one more part than the AK, that being the locking piece. I don't think that single additional part should cause much concern. The trigger mechanism is simpler than the AK's since it's striker fired.

The rifle has a reputation for both quality and reliability. I would take this rifle over some of the lower priced AK's floating around out there with all sorts of quality issues.

It's just another option for someone looking for a small, light, handy .30 caliber carbine. There's no reason you can't have both an AK and a Vz.58 if you're so inclined.
