I'm engaging in a bit of whimsy. I don't need another 9mm pistol but I'm thinking it's time to try something new. What's on my radar is the Walther PPQ and the CZ P-01. Currently, they are both pretty close in price so that's not an issue in choosing one over the other.

I know they are very different handguns. The CZ is an all metal DA/SA, decocker and hammer ignition. The Walther is a polymer pistol that is striker ignition with a consistent trigger pull from shot to shot. But I currently use and enjoy Glocks and SIGs and they are also very different and equivalent in design to the CZ and Walther.

So give me some opinions about the PPQ and the P-01 in 9mm, their reliability, handling, potential problems in the design or function, inherent accuracy, availability of magazines and accessories, how the manufacturer responds to customers...anything else that comes to mind. Thanks in advance.

I held a Walther PPQ and it was a bit weird feeling [with the design of the grip]. Trigger was nice, though. I don't have any other information.

My brother has a P-01 and it shoots quite well, and of course, it's a CZ, so they pretty much feel good in anyone's hand. His gun has been very reliable. Very good accuracy as well.

You have picked my two favorite handguns. I have both, and could not choose between the two without a gun to my head.

I have handled all the major brands of polymer+stricker fired guns, and owned a few of them, and the Walther beats them all hands down for ergonomics and (stock) trigger. The closest other would be an M&P Pro. The paddle mag release makes much more sense once you've used it a bit. The stock sights are adjustable. The only knock I have against it is the high barrel axis does make recoil a bit stronger than it should be.

My CZ-P01 is a little more accurate in single action, and has less recoil due to the ultra low barrel axis.

Accessories for the CZ are more plentiful right now, but neither have the support Glock or S&W have for options. CZ mags are cheap and plentiful (mec-gar); Walther's are expensive and difficult to find. I've only had one failure with either, that was the CZ due to limp wristing a one-handed left hand shot (my left hand is very weak--I'm not ambidextrous in the least).

The CZ can be converted to a 22lr with a Kadet upper.

I don't own a CZ but have fired my Son's CZ SP01 quite a few times. Nice pistol but does not float my boat.

LOVE my Walther PPQ however. Perfect grip and outstanding trigger with nice crisp break and crazy short reset and crazy accurate. I like the changeable backstraps also which come in really handy when other family members or friends want to get the best fit for their hand/fingers with the PPQ.

A LOT of Walther PPQ owners are buying the Magnum Reasearch magazines for their Walther PPQ clone that are very high quality made by Mecgar and work great in the PPQ.
Midway is selling them for $22 each right now.

Personally I never fell in love or even like with any CZ firearm. They do not look all that good to me and just look ugly in my mind. I have fondled a few in gun stores to see if I could get over their ugliness for the sake of functionality and they just do not fit my hand right.

The PPQ is a nice pistol but doesn't hold a candle to the P99AS although I will probably still get one to keep up with my namesake.

I don't have the PPQ but I have the P99 AS and my father has the P-01. It's a tough decision. The machining of the steel part are better on the Walther with virtually no tool marks; you are also getting the tenifer finish. The CZ is well refined outside, not so inside. The CZ is more compact than the Walther. The accuracy is the same with maybe a slightly advantage for the CZ due to the smaller and narrower sights.
Between the PPQ and the P-01 I'd choose the CZ because I like DA/SA pistols better than "safe action" ones. Between the P99 AS and the P-01, sorry but I can't decide (OK, when it was the time I chose the P99 AS because the P-01 was already in my family ;)).

I can't speak to the CZ, but I own a number of 9mm handguns including the PPQ, and the PPQ is the most accurate 9mm I have (not counting my 1911 9mm). It has great ergonomics, a wonderful crisp trigger, and just shoots lights out.

I cannot recommend the PPQ highly enough. Mine has the original paddle style mag release which I actually prefer to the button release on the newer ones, but regardless of which version you get the PPQ will not be a disappointment. It's just REALLY easy to shoot accurately.
