I've been getting more interested in the CZ82 recently and had a few questions.

First, my biggest concern is getting the pistol, having something break, and then not being able to find spare parts (not very handy myself so fabricating a part isn't going to be easy). What parts are most likely to break, and are they available? Can I expect any sort of support from CZ? I'm thinking a new recoil spring is a good idea, but other than that I'm lost. If I have a part break 10 years from now that's not replaceable I'd rather just buy a used "mainstream" pistol.

Next question would be do you have any experiences with self defense ammo in this caliber?

I think those are my biggest questions right now. Everything else I have read about these makes them seem like really nice, reliable, accurate pistols. Feel free to share your experiences if you'd like. For $170-190 from CDNN they seem like quite a deal (probably get the $170 one and refinish it as a nice project fyi).

CZ still makes a CZ-83, which is the .380 version of the CZ-82. I am sure you can get spare parts from them, although they wont work on your gun, I think...

At that price, might as well buy 3 and if one breaks it can be used for spare parts, in the worst case scenario.

I have one and my brothers have some as well. They are good guns.

Aside from the aesthetics (the nice bluing on the Cz83), the Cz82 and Cz83 in 9x18 are identical, save the barrel.

Solution: Buy two. That way you'll always have a spare.

The CZ82 and 83 share many identical parts. Getting a new part shouldn't be an issue.

Brassfetcher tested 9x18 loads, the cheap Silver Bear did pretty well and it is what I ordered for my CZ82. Bonus: CHEAP! (I ordered 500 silver bear HP rounds and 1000 Brown Bear FMJ, I may just order the SB HP rounds in the future)

The CZ83 and 82 are pretty much the same gun, and I've read about CZ supporting surplus 82 models (they charge, of course, there's no warranty on those things)

Parts are interchangeable with the CZ-83...barrel not so...different caliber

Bottom line is that this is a $200+or- gun. If it breaks scrap it. Also, the CZ-82 has a lot of parts and is complex to detail strip and get back together...which may or may not be a concern for you.

If you are seriously concerned about parts for a SHTF scenario, then my suggestion would be to get a Glock, Sig or other commercially available and widely adopted pistol where parts availability is not much of a concern.

I bought a CZ-82 because I already have a Makarov, I handload the caliber, and for the price these are hard to pass up...fun gun for sure.

For self defense I prefer to rely on other guns...so, can't help you much with the ammo question other than asking if you checked out the Corbon self defense load in 9x18? http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/product_info.php/pName/20rds-9x18-makarov-corbon-powrball-70gr-ammo

Cz 82

I have one and I really like it. However, I would not consider it a first line SD pistol. It is on a night stand as a backup to a tactical shotgun. The only reason I have it as a backup is 13 rounds, very natural pointer and single action so I can pull the hammer and shoot without fumbling. It is, IMHO too heavy for carry when you consider the attribute is a lot of rounds.

THE 82 and the 83 ARE the same gun
spare parts work, now, some of the 83 parts might be from one of the later versions, and require a little fitting (same as parts from different runs of Browning HP's or 1911's)
but they all work.

As far as refinishing, READ, and learn, and consider carefully before disassembling this gun, the sear spring tensions the hammer block, and it's a notorious PAIN to get right, On the bright side, CZ-USA now offers an assembly service (custom shop) for the 82, they will make your Bag Gun right for only $70.

Agreed with mgmorden he is more specific...

I was assuming that if you want to keep it 9x18 its not a match...

I'm guessing this is more of a problem for the less technically inclined (and I'm guessing very few people that would specifically frequent a site like this fall into that category). I've had a lot of guns that were pretty aggravating to get back together, but never impossible.

The closest I have ever come was with an old Hi Standard .22 rifle. That's the only one I've taken down that I couldn't put back together from memory. It sat in pieces on the table until I could find a schematic for the gun online.

The CZ83 is also 9x18...........and .32ACP and.380.
I have them all, along with the CZ82.
Best I know all the parts are interchangeable.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like my concern of spare parts for the pistol isn't really a concern at all. As to the self defense ammo., it wouldn't be a front line HD weapon, but might serve as a backup. Mostly I want it as a cool range toy that at least has the capability to be a defense pistol.

Well it still is the issued side arm for the Czech army, so they think it works for defense, there are some good loads out there, if you are concerned, get some of the Buffalo Bore loads. As far as a range toy, well, you will find the list of guns going to the range getting shorter as the ammo is cheap and the CZ82 is VERY accurate, in addition to being a pleasure to shoot.

The CZ 82 may be a perfect match for you then HMG22. Because it is a cool range toy that can also serve as a backup. In fact I carry them in both vehicles as dedicated car guns, due to their low cost, capacity, and accuracy.

The CZ-82 is a very simple, basic, quality pistol. Like all CZs, it's very accurate and a real pleasure to shoot.
As all have mentioned, parts are really not a problem and are interchangeable with the CZ-83.
9mm Mak ammo in HP is not a problem and can be easily had. In today's world of $500+ pistolas, the '82 is still a TRUE VALUE for a quality, all-metal gun.
If you can get a VG condition for around $200, jump on it... you will enjoy this pistola!!!
