So, it looks like I'm going to be moving to Washington, D.C. later this year. I'm from, and currently live in, Missouri, which has always had pretty good gun laws. However, I'm moving, and I need to know specific laws and how they relate to my situation. I know that handguns are prohibited (pending court ruling), but that's about it. How are rifles handled in D.C.? I'm going to have to leave my handguns with my family, will I need to do the same with my rifles?

Why not move to Virginia instead?
I've worked in DC for 26 years and lived in Northern Virginia.
My commute from Northern VA to SW DC takes 25 minutes.
In VA you can not only bring your handguns, but Virginia is a Shall Issue CHP state.

BTW, DC will allow you to posess a rifle or shotgun, but only if you leave it in your house, unloaded, and locked or disassembled.

Oh, I'd prefer to live in Virginia, it's such a beautiful state, but I'm required to live on Campus for my first two years of school. :banghead:

Yes, there are many schools out there to choose from, pick another that shows a little more respect for your rights, in an area that also respects your rights. No reason to support those who will infringe on your rights.

The more detailed answer is that handguns are prohibited in DC unless registered, but registration was closed about 20+ years ago.
Long guns must be disassembled or have a trigger lock to render them disabled.

The murder rate in DC remains high, and while mainly confined to east of Rock Creek has moved into the edges of NW and other areas west of Rock Creek.
The crime rate in a number of the Maryland counties that border on DC is also high (Montgomery is low but very $$).
Even mace and OC spray is restricted in DC.

They really like the victims to be compliant and unarmed.

Here are the laws on DC:

Handguns absolutely prohibited, even with the recent ruling, DC has stated that they will continue to enforce the old law. Only a certain number of handguns are allowed in DC, and they must have been registered prior to
1976.

Shotguns and rifles are allowed, but MUST be registered with the DC Police. They must be stored disassembled and unloaded. Ammunition must not be kept near the weapon.

Ammunition AND Pepper Spray also need to be registered with the DC Police.

In short, if you want gun rights, live in VA. We're just across the river and actually allow citizens to defend themselves.

I've lived in the metro DC area for over 30 years. I wouldn't attend any university in DC - even on a 100% scholarship. They vastly underreport crime in the areas around campus so that the students "feel safer". Sound familiar?

Pick another school - there are better ones out there. Your life ain't worth it.

FWIW it was noted by another member here that Utah doesn't prohibit CCW on campus per state law.
