If Bush ( or any President) had a handgun ( I assume that Bush must own some , surely Reagan must have.) and they wanted to bring it to D.C.. Would they be required to register it? I assume that the gun that Saddam Hussien was captured W/ was an autoloader, is Bush violating D.C. gun laws if he keeps it at the White House.

Do they just keep the stuff outside of Washington D.C. ?

UFTA... I do recall Kennedy (the drunk driver who killed his mistress one) had his personal body guards try to smuggle weapons into Capital...
As it is Federal property I would think there would be a way around it for the Pres. (lets say if I was pres I would make dang sure I had Fed. cert so after I left office I could still carry everywhere.

Even if the White House is federal property It's still his home so what laws would apply?

If the past eight years tells us anything it is that George bush can and does what ever he wants.

He's a sworn law enforcement officer, being the head of the Executive Branch. Thus he should be qualified to carry a gun wherever he sees fit (including D.C.). If he sought to have his private gun collection kept in the White House, he'd technically have to register the handguns, but somehow I doubt anyone would care if he did, and if he did, I have a feeling he'd get his registration papers back much faster than a "normal" citizen.

I'd imagine that that's limited to crimes of the office (high crimes and misdemeanors). I have a feeling that if the POTUS decided to haul off and bash somebody's face in with a baseball bat or shoot somebody in the face in full view of the public, DCPD would have something to say about the matter.

Heck, Wesley Snipes and Diane Lane might even get involved.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

...the White House grounds are administered by the National Park Service. All NPS rules apply, don't they?

I think the Secret Service might get to him first, though..

Hmmm... does this mean he gets HR218-carry too?

I would think that a former or sitting President would have ample cause to carry a weapon to protect their life.

That said , I didn't start this so we could have a big political bash fest

Does 'above the law' even if there is a law come to mind for both parties including the president?!?

I'm sure President Bush has had a gun in his nightstand in the White House the past 7 1/2 years.
I'm also sure the issue has never come up between him and the Secret Service.
It's just a given. With his mindset he's going to be armed no matter how much SS protection is on the other side of the door,IMO.
But with my recent track record with the Dow Jones,I may be 100% incorrect.

As commander and chief of the military, wouldn't he be allowed to have any weapon the military has?

He's Commander in Chief. He's neither a member of the military nor a "law enforcement officer."

Thats actually a very intresting question.

I would love for a legal egale to explain, why or why not.
