Everytime I think about what it must have been like riding in a Higgins boat in a choopy sea, just knowing what was going to happen when the ramp dropped, I just say "wow!"

I agree, and I thank you for your post.
I was a professional officer, serving for decades, with years of training, and with lengthy experience in operational, staff and command assignments. These “kids†averaged about 20 years old, with less than three years service, and with leaders – especially at company and field grade – that were almost as inexperienced. Well, these kids – through courage, unit cohesion, and plain gutsy determination – defeated the German Army, then thought by many to be the most professional military force in the world.
Heroes all, inspirations to all of us, liberators of Europe, they shaped the world we know today, ensuring American liberty and prosperity. May God bless each of them.

Nothing funny about it. The profound ignorance our our history and utter contempt for our sacrifices is a testament to the failure of our education system.
The term D-Day most certainly stands for something.

The Greatest Generation of men and women in the US History. Those men died, storming those beaches, so we may have the "right" to argue, disagree, and fight over our own opinions. We owe our freedoms, prosperity, and our thanks to all of them.

I get choked up every time I hear or read this:
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Forces: You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.
But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!
Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

Just for some perspective...
Discovery Channel just talked about a training operation prepping for D-day where they lost over 700 men. That's in a TRAINING OP.
That's more than what we have had in Iraq last time I checked... and that was a TRAINING OP.

The Discovery shows were pretty well done, as was the one about the marines on IWO earlier.
When you look at the accomplishments of the WW2 era troops and civilians and all teh hardships they faced at such an overwhelming task...
You gotta just take your hat off.

There is only one war and every generation has fought their part of the war by facing down or destroying the tyrant of the day. The troops of WWII literally saved the world and left an example that will be remembered as long as men fight and destroy tyrants. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." The war continues......

D-Day = why the French still speak French right now instead of German.
60 years since the beginning of the end of WWII.
A few years back I went to Slapton Sands in Devon where you guys practised amphibious assault. Years after the war some fishermen reported snagging their nets repeatedly several hundred yards offshore. An American tank was under there. It now stands on the beach. You guys had it rough at Omagh, thank you for the sacrifices you made there.
