Dad is looking for a Nightstand duty gun.

Here is the reason why my father didn't get the CZ. He couldn't gather enough strength to pull the slide back consistently each time. On some models of the CZ, the slide is slim and not much you can grap on. My father had a weak grip as he got older, so he that's why he didn't pick the CZ. But I think the CZ is a very good gun too.

This is an excellent point. I have a cousin who has arthritis in his hands; he doesn't shoot for fun. His handgun of choice is a revolver because he finds it too hard to manipulate the slide of a semi-auto.

By the way, what's the barrel length on your Dad's 629? If it's a dedicated pig-hunting gun with a very long barrel, that could be reason to sell it in lieu of something else.

He needs a full size gun since he has fibromyalgia and needs something large he can grip.
IMO your dad will be well served by a S&W Model 10 revolver. You can find them used for a very fair price and he can then own the original M&P. You can fit any type of grips your dad needs to make shooting comfortable and the .38 Special won't beat him up while still being a good SD round. The 158gr LSWC/HP round (The FBI Load) will do the job indoors without excessive flash or bang... Also, there's no chance of the normal problems associated with a semi-auto that may be a problem for your father to clear because of his Fibromyalgia. Just a few things that might matter...

Either a high cap 9mm or .45 sounds like the name of the game. Go with whatever fits his hand the best.

How does your 22 conversion work? I have the P229 40cal and I am thinking about getting the conversion kit for it.

I'd suggest a M64 over a M10 simply because being made out of stainless he has even less reason to have to pull maintenance on it. Every other argument in favor of the M10 also applies.

Get a 4" barrel, put the Buffalo Bore FBI load in it & don't look back. Run a box through it so he knows how it kicks (gently) and that it hits where he aims (the joy of 158 grains of PB in a K frame) and he'll sleep much better.

Nightstand Duty

It really just depends on what you dad likes the best. Hit the range and rent a couple handguns first and find out which fits him best. All of the suggestions made have been good ones. Given the description of what he is looking for either a steel 9mm or 1911 GI. Those are both around the same price point and can be found used.

The OP hasn't hit this thread in a while. Would like to know what was decided. I still vote for .44 specials through the revolver unless it has an unwieldy-long barrel.
