My old man recently started doing some leather work.
Thus far, he has made a couple of sheaths for knives and some repair work.
I presented him with a challenge.
I have a two pound Wetterlings axe that I like to take on canoe trips.
The exposed poll rubs on the inside of my vinyl portage pack.
I asked if he would try to make a nice, field worthy, sheath that would provide more metal coverage.
He showed up and then some.
His work inspired me, so I was compelled to step up my efforts on a shoulder protector that needed replacing.

The shoulder protector was fashioned from the tongue of an old work boot.
I'm not sure why I'm so proud of that, but it seems to add to provenance.

Bravo Dad!

Terrific work!

I tend to be sparse with my praise, too. I'm very impressed.

That sheath would be highly desirable if you had fond it on the open market - priceless coming from your dad!

Congratulations.

I haven't seen anything like that before, and I love it.

You and your dad make a good team.

I wish the picture had a "buy it now" icon at the bottom, so I could click that sucker right now!

The protector was cut to shape, and the sewn ends just barely overlapped.
Then I marked and punched the stitching holes.
I used a stitch that required two needles and waxed thread. I wish I knew the real name of the stitch, but I honestly just hopped around Youtube until I found one I liked.

The leather wasn't quite long enough to sew up, so a good tug on the thread pulled the damp leather together and left in nice and tightly wrapped around the hickory handle.
