I think the UBC is a losing battle because the average voter will want to "feel safe" by having all gun sales go thru NICS. They'll understand that you want to buy a rifle from your Uncle, but "if you've nothing to hide, why oppose UBC?"
The eventual problem with UBC is how are you going to PROVE you acquired a firearm in a private sale before UBC? No one could, unless you have "proof" that you processed it through the UBC? Well gee, now how can that be accomplished?
Someone (the anti's) will come up with a
solution to
fix this. For six months under a program (cleverly) called "The Firearms Protection Act" everyone will be required to take all their firearms in their possession down to the processing center and have them registered (for free) under the UBC through an FFL and they will be entered into a national database and they will get a little ID card for their firearm and this would provide "proof" that the firearm went through the UBC. After all it is an
reasonable request, you have nothing to hide? Eh?
It's to
protect the owner (cough, cough) from false allegations that a firearm was never registered. It would provide 'proof' that the owner owns it free and clear. That is why they called it the "The Firearms Protection Act". You say to your self, "well it's not THAT bad like Australia or the UK".
However, after six months the amnesty will end, any firearms that did not get registered and have no ID card cannot be sold, or transferred and have to be turned in and destroyed by the government. But existing firearms that were registered under the "The Firearms Protection Act" are 100% legal and untouchable by the government. You say to yourself,
"..my guns are protected...what a relief"
A year later they will make another ruling that says you must be licensed in order to keep registered guns. You protest, but then you realize the license is
"free" and they are giving everyone six months to get licensed. You say
"I guess it is not that bad"....
So now they license all gun owners and they have the list of registered firearms under their license. While the license is
free the fingerprinting, the digital photographs, the LEO sign off, the 25 point background check and the four character references all did seem a little over the top. But (whew!) you are good to go and now you are
really legal now and everything is properly documented. What a relief? eh?
A few months after that ruling, some nut goes on some shooting escapade and the now the government demands that certain classes of firearms must be turned into the government. Now we are really screwed...Think Australia and all those guns that were crushed and destroyed.
How would they enforce all of this? Through the IRS confiscation laws. Don't comply, they will take your house, your car and throw you in jail for a few years. Think I am exaggerating?
I read their proposals, I read what they said. I also studied what they did in other countries as well. And don't think that it can't happen here. One or two really bad administrations (worse than Bill Clinton) could end our gun rights...as we know it.
Did I scare anyone? Did I get you thinking? Good!
We should NEVER accept Universal Background Check laws. The fine citizens of Washington state were sold down the river by out of state big money interests with I-584, as were Colorado and Oregon. And if we are not careful, it will happen in our state and in our country too.
We should
never accept the fact that Universal Background Checks as inevitable, rather we should fight it tooth and nail as wholly unacceptable. We need to fight this at both the state level and the national level.
