Just to be an overly-serious buzzkill...

...lying to your spouse is almost never a good idea. Xmas, Valentines Day and her birthday are the only real exceptions. ;)

Or when she asks you, "Honey does this (insert article of clothing) make me look fat?"

Modern science has only discovered two effective tactics that lead to any chance of surviving that no-win scenario. Either calmy answer in the negative, if necessary lying your ass off, and you better be convincing either way. Or you can point behind her then run away when she turns to look.

I think you should take your chances and shoot for the "two week" rule.

If you get new hunting equipment, motor, power tool, gun, guitar, etc., there is a 2-week period in which it is officially "new".

If you significant other does not notice the "new" item within this two-week period, it is no longer "new" and can be referred to as "oh, that old thing...we've had that for quite a while now...".

This may be difficult to pull off with a safe, but if you get the exact same model you have now, and they are in an unobtrusive location, it may add a bit of confusion.

Warning -- this can also apply to shoes, purses, coats, etc.:D

What about a simple security device to hold the less valuable weapons?

In other words, sink an eye bolt into the concrete somewhere and loop a hefty cable through the actions of a few weapons and secure with a solid lock.
Make sure you grease em up good to withstand the elements and then cover them somehow. Not quite a safe, but a way to store weapons until a new safe can be bargained on.

I would buy a separate safe for the handguns and remodel the other safe for long guns. Depends on what your future gun buying plans are. My suspicion is that you will need another safe anyway.

OR build a little wood book case type thing and stack the long guns there with a plastic coated cable through the trigger guards and lock. Your wife may enjoy the wood making project! You can put doors on it so the guns guns will not be visible. Not as good as a safe, but not too bad really.

Well the current status is I will start upgrading and stay with the current safe for at least another year. If I get rid of my brother's 22 then I can get either a 222 or AR clone or M1 carbine. I also have room for at least a couple of triple locks/Registered's if I can find a few I like.

Temp. fix

Peter,
I may have a solution.Trade me that sendero for my Sako, bofors steel, L461,.222.
May only be a temp. fix though.

P.M.E.;

I sell safes. The company that makes them does customs, mostly because their primary business is bank equipment, which is always custom. They will make you anything that can be fit on an over-the-road truck. Up to you to get it off on your end though. But, you can involve the engineer in the design, that way it becomes 'her' safe. If it isn't big enough for the foreseeable future, it's HER fault!

See what a rotten sneak I am :D ?
