Yesterday, I shot an SKS and AR15 at 100 yards at a piece of computer paper with open sights. Out of 30 rounds with the SKS, I scored only one hit. The hit just touched the bottom of the paper. With the AR15, I hit the paper 15 out of 20 times. Most of the misses were sustained during the initial shots. During this whole ordeal, I had my buddy calling out where my shots were going so that I could adjust. In the case of the SKS, the adjustments were useless. This is just some food for thought about the inherent accuracies of the 7.62X39 and 5.56X45 rounds as well as the accuracies of the SKS and AR15 rifles. If anyone has any similar experiences or comments, please speak up. Thanks.

My only comment would be to start shooting at a much closer range than 100 yards, and work on technique.

Gonna go out on a limb here and guess that the accuracy results you are seeing are not the fault of the rifle or the ammo.

I truly do not believe the 5.56 is any more inherently accurate than the 7.62x39. There's a reason so many benchrest cartridges are based on the x39. If you have any doubts about its capabilities just ask Krochus.

In my experience, most 7.62 ammo is usually lower quality than most .223/5.56 ammo. Not always, but often. That makes a huge difference.

Regardless of chambering, the AR-15 will generally be more accurate. Setting aside mechanical accuracy, the AR-15 is far superior in practical accuracy, which is much more important in the real world. The much longer sight radius and far better sights of the AR series make a huge difference.

The paper died with that one shot from the SKS. OTOH, the other piece of paper was last seen wounded and angry from 15 AR rounds.

I have four different types of SKS..... they all shoot MUCH better that that.....

How did you shoot, bench? off-hand, prone, kneeling, off your hood, bipod, bags? etc? If your shooting is that far off, Start with 5 round groups at a 25 yd target in a stable position, once those are decent, then move farther out. I think you need to get back to the basics of shooting. Sorry just my $.02

My SKS is remarkably accurate at 100 yards. 9 out of 10 shots usually end up in the "vital zone" on a silhouette target, not to mention it's tons of fun to shoot.

You can't jump to that conclusion. No offense, but you need more practice.

I love my AR15s, they are my favorite rifles, but my SKS do way better than that. I can do 4-6" groups at 100Y with my better condition SKS and Barnual, S&B or Tiger ammo. That easily gets all the shots on 8x11" paper with room to spare. I'm not even a good shot.

Then again, I have a few other SKS that have horrible triggers and that makes accuracy a challenge.
