WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. police will try to reduce violence in the city by buying guns off the street this weekend through an amnesty program.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier says arguments are too often resolved with guns and taking guns out of homes can help save lives.

The gun amnesty program will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. People who turn in weapons will be granted amnesty from any gun possession charges.

The program is open to residents from D.C. and nearby jurisdictions, including Arlington County and Alexandria in Virginia and Maryland's Prince George's and Montgomery counties.

Guns will be accepted at three locations: Shiloh Baptist Church in Northwest, Holy Christian House of Praise in Northeast and Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast.

The pay scale for guns will range from $10 for a pellet gun to $100 for an assault rifle or semiautomatic pistol.

Sounds like those starter pistol junkers will do some good!

Quick! Get those illegal guns off the street before they're legal!

"Separation of church and state" - interesting, how they're violating the 1st Amendment to try and encroach upon the 2nd. Gee, I wonder why leftists don't care about the 1st when they can abuse it to their own ends... could it be that their first belief is "what's good for you isn't good enough for me"?

Isn't this a case of "mixing of church & state"??? I'm serious...no joke!

In my book? Damn straight! Might this be grounds for some sort of civil suit?

Sounds like those starter pistol junkers will do some good!

Na, they'll give you $10 for them. In all liklihood, they'll give people $10 for anything and everything, short of something really expensive (well, valued at $400+ on the "white market"). Double-barrel Damascus steel shotgun with intricate bronze plating? Ten dollars.

More info...

A question... if they're not checking ID's, how will they know that people turning in guns don't live in the affected areas, or that they're not FFL's?

DC Gun Buyback/Amnesty Info

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced today that a Gun Amnesty Program will be in affect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2007.

The Gun Amnesty Program is part of the Metropolitan Police Department's commitment to reducing gun violence in the District, and is an opportunity for people to turn in their weapons to authorities without fear of prosecution.

"All too often arguments and disputes are resolved through the use of firearms," Chief Lanier said. "Taking guns out of homes and off the streets will help save lives."

The program is open only to residents of the District of Columbia or one of the following jurisdictions: Prince George's County, Md.; Montgomery County, Md.; Arlington County, Va.; or Alexandria, Va.

No payments will be made to gun dealers. If gun dealers bring in weapons, they will be taken, but no payments will be provided. Identification will not be required to participate. Only weapons in working order will receive payment.

People turning in weapons will be granted amnesty from any gun possession charges that might apply.

The following payment scale shall be followed:

Assault type rifle, automatic/semi-automatic pistol $100
Revolvers $50
Derringers $50
Shot guns $50
Rifles $50
Air/BB/pellet guns $10

Participating locations include:
Shiloh Baptist Church
1510 9th Street, NW

Holy Christian House of Praise
5110 Nannie Helen Burroughs Ave., NE

Union Temple Baptist Church
1225 W Street, SE.

Sounds like a great opportunity to turn in your old/worthless/broken firearms and use the money to buy new ones. I love gun buyback programs.

Dope

Now how can DC have a "gun buy back"
DC is a "gun free" zone. Are they inviting guns in?
How is it a "buy back", did they sell the guns (in their gun free zone)?

I just can't make any sense out of this.

Beware the roadblocks checking for guns enroute to the buyback sites. It's only amnesty if it's at the buyback sites. If they catch you en route, all bets are off.

No roadblocks - trust me - MPD is happy to take the guns no questions asked. There's been an armed robbery spree in my GF's DC neighborhood [emphasis on hood] & last night someone tried to pull one on an off duty officer. gun battle ensued.

Anyway, the Chief was in front of the City Council last week and without hesitation admitted these buybacks aren't very effective. Lots of old ladies turning in ancient, inoperable, rusty revolvers and such. Also plenty of non-functioning junk Raven/Jennings/Bryco/Lorcin/Davis .22's, .25's & .32's.

How much did they sell the guns for originally? And what brands of guns did they sell? I'd also be interested in knowing the address of the DC store where the District sells the guns it buys back. Or are there retail gun outlet stores in those churches?

I've never heard of churches that bought and sold guns before now. If this is a new kind of ministry it's one I really like. What better warranty could there be than on a gun from a church.

I guess that it's okay now to carry guns in those churches?

Wonder if the minister will be dressed like Clint Eastwood, aka "Preacher," in Pale Rider?

[CE Wanna-be, in husky, breathy voice]
"All right, all you suns-of-biskits...Ahm gonna be readin' to you outta my Gun Book here."

[Liberal gun-hater]
"Uh, preacher...don't you mean, 'Good Book'?"

[CE Wanna-Be]
"No, I can't read out of the Good Book because that would violate these so-and-so's rights. But I can read them out of the Blue Book of Gun Values and tell them how much their grandpappy's old Colt was worth before they dropped it in my collection plate. If they would have gone to a legal gun shop, they could have made enough dough to buy a couple cases of beer. Instead, they'll get enough for bus fare home. Don't you feel safe now? Well, don't you? You've just made my day..."

Bet you a donut and a cup of coffee that Colt SAA or WW1 Luger that gets turned in never makes it to the smelter.

The officers that participate in these gun buy backs rarely care about historic firearms.

Some of 'em don't even care about their OWN firearms. You'd be astounded at how many DC cops answered the question of "so what are you guys issued these days?" with a reply of... Ummm, (look down), it's a, uh, (fill in the blank here).

I'm torn!

My heavily customized Jennings J22 has been a wonderful companion on cold winter nights, but I could be tempted for $100. Custom features include stipling on the slide and frame (where it was dropped on the driveway) and specialized grips which have a just a hint of duct tape to hold them together (due to the same dropping incident).

(Unfortunately, my county seems to be excluded from the list.)
