It is not seperation from church and state in that the church volunteers. However a Mosque or Synagog (spelling?) could volunteer to be a collection site. Not to mention the government is not making these churches or their religions into a state religion.

Caimlas: How do you know these people are leftists? What evidence do you have?

Aside from the issue of gun free cities and how unconstitutional they are. I am not sure if these gun rallies are that bad. From a standpoint that yes you can ditch a bunch of your old firearms that dont work. As far as taking guns off the street, I guess maybe it will get a "few" but I am willing to bet that none will be from the criminals.

:)

I'd like to see the violent crime stats for the 48 hour period preceding the event. Don't think the bad guys aren't smart enough to pull a hold up and then turn right around and dump the evidence off with the very police supposedly dedicated to hunting the offender down. Now the cops will take extra special care to destroy said evidence! That's JUSTICE!

Hey now, some of my shooting buddies most prized and trusted backup pistols came from the evidence room, so i guess stuff like this isnt all bad for us all.
not when they're melted down.

I doubt if any good guns make it to the smelter. How about straight razors, knives, screwdrivers, ice picks, hammers, axes, etc?

Yet more tax dollars wasted to the tune of mere millions, just before they become legal again. How interesting is that? There ought to be a law against stupidity.

I hate these feel-good programs. I'd love to see before and after crime statistics from the cities that hold these ridiculous events.

I doubt if any good guns make it to the smelter.

They probably see a Broomstick Mauser and go, "eh, looks too old to work, may as well melt it."

I'd like to romanticize and think that there'd be a cop with a soft heart for old guns there, but more than likely, it's probably that all the cops are threatened with severe punishment for taking any of the turned in guns.

the seperation of Church and State is imaginary

"Separation of church and state" - interesting, how they're violating the 1st Amendment to try and encroach

The 1st Amendment (basically) says that we ought not have a "Church Of The USA" because of the control "The Church Of England" had.

The so called
"Separation of church and state"
is a basturdization of part of a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote that the liberals seem to love and seem to believe is in the COTUS (hint, it aint!)

I wish we could have laws based on all of Jefferson's letters, why cant the liberals embrace all of Thomas Jefferson's letters?
"As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives [only] moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion to your walks."
-- Thomas Jefferson, writing to his teenaged nephew.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Hey, gunsmith, that's part of my sig.

Ok, same question posed another way. Are they going to run serial numbers before destroying these guns? I had the same thought about the spike in burglary preceding the ban and then selling them straight for cash. Then again, the "guns off the street and out of homes" comment leads me to believe they don't really care how they get "out of the home".

So, if they have a legally possessed item stolen from a home and they buy it back, that's commerce in stolen property right? Then, if they destroy said stolen property after they are in possession of it, that's destruction of evidence and possibly obstruction of justice. Just how I see it.

Sounds like a great way to rid the world of a few more Ravens, Lorcins and other Saturday Night Specials. The world needs more paper clips and beer bottle openers, not unreliable cheap pistols.

As a Christian pastor, I find it interesting (for lack of a better word) and somewhat bothersome that they are using churches as gun collection centers.

Isn't this a case of "mixing of church & state"??? I'm serious...no joke!

Thanks,
Q

As a lay minister I find it funny you would have a problem with using the church for a public relations function that is neither illegal or against the bible... I am not a fan of the buy back programs and feel they are a waste and only a feel good event for those in fear for the most part but they do in reality give a way for guns to be safely removed from people who don't want them in their homes.

I did make out at the one I went to a week or so back ;) mine did not even function...

As far as guns in church my assault rifles and registered subgun have been used in sermans- in the youth program several different times as props with the leaderships permission... then again I did provide a live goat and several guns one service with a 5 hour notice... they had told my pastor it could not likely be done. I did not own the goat BTW- I just made a cold call at a house where I knew one was available. Neither the guns nor the live goat seemed to bother God much :D
