somehow I do not see this guy as the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Just asking for trouble, not that I am above that kind of stupidity.

What a moron. He was a block - two at most - from the U.S. Capitol building.

John

LOC = Library of Congress
Independence runs E-W below the Capitol.
1st St. SE runs N-S on the right side. 2nd is one more to the right.

(I wonder if they'll still let you park on Sunday afternoons on the short street between the Botanic Gardens and the Capitol (lower left of the Capitol.) There was never anybody there. People would drive in circles for hours looking for a spot and never see the little "M-Sat" on the no parking signs. I doubt they let anybody park that close anymore.)

I used to have a "not inert" pineapple grenade when I was a kid. Loads of fun.

I'm betting it would only qualify as "inert" if it was filled with epoxy and permanently sealed with the striker and spring removed and the spoon welded down. Prolly has to be painted blaze orange, too.

But, since even an inert grenade in such condition would be an effective bludgeoning tool, it has to be registered with the local police. They'll kindly store it for you, and issue a Styrofoam facsimile (some fees apply.) Of course, the facsimile can't leave your house (or your safe,) without prior written consent, which can only be obtained upon presentation of three signed and notarized affidavits (no friends or relatives, please,) asserting that you are of outstanding moral fiber, aren't crazy, addicted to any substance, or oversexed. There's a minimum two week wait while the paper work shuffles through, and a small fee ($150 minimum. Depends on the completeness of your applications, the type of inert facsimile grenade substitute you'll be transporting, and the amount of time it'll spend out of your safe.) When (read: if,) your Inert Styrofoam Facsimile Grenade Substitute Transportation Approval Form comes through, you have a maximum of twenty-four hours to commence transportation in a D.C. Approved explosion-proof locked shipping crate (cancellation of transportation and nullification of the forms requires another small fee.) Oh, I forgot to mention the small matter of the annually recurring tax to cover the cost of your real inert grenade which is safely on store at the local PD (read: Desk Sergeant Lebowitz's home book case.)

^Satire, for those who didn't figure it out

Honestly, this reminds me of that hoopla in Britain a while back. Massive panic because somebody found a .22 short on the sidewalk. Much ado about nothing. Poppycock. Bull pucky. Horse hockey. Cow pies and Sheep dip. Nonsense. Antisense, even. (I oughta copyright that. Anti-sense. Sounds like a good read to me. . .)

Oh, and before I click "Submit Reply," WTF was that guy thinking? This was one of those times when "the way things should be", got epic pwnd by "the way things are." I seriously hope he planned all this, and has a strategy to clamber up out of the pot, but I suspect some poor, slightly dumb Virginian just ruined his life:(

To be real honest (and I know I'm treading dangerously into tinfoil hat territory with this one), reading stuff like this makes me even wonder if it's real. I mean what could possibly be a better opportunity for a bit of Security Theater / culture of fear manipulation than to report an "incident" involving a man with guns, "numerous rounds of ammunition" and a "not inert" "IED"? In order to be that stupid... I don't know. That scenario seems, to me, to be too much like what Fenty would love to see on his newspapers to convince his constituents that guns are dangerous and should be outlawed.

Whether it's right or not, true or not, it really makes me wonder if it even really happened or was all just staged.

Although the rational part of me wants to doubt it very strongly, the honest part of me says that today, anything is possible.

[Albemarle is the county surrounding Charlottesville. JT]

"Authorities said Timmons was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon in March in Albemarle County, Virginia, and served a month in jail. In that incident, Timmons had two grenades in his car, said Albemarle Police Chief John Miller.

The pins had been removed and the grenades were filled with powder, authorities said. They had an adhesive on top to close them and a firecracker for a fuse.

Law enforcement sources said the grenades were similar to an item found in Timmons vehicle Friday. That device has been taken to the FBI facility in Quantico, Virginia."

Interesting, I took a dummy grenade, threaded the bottom and used it as a shifter knob on my 79 bronco. I wonder if that would be considered an IED.

He's still braver than I would be. I wouldn't take any firearms into D.C. out of fear of the police stealing them from me. I'm sure he is in big trouble now and probably can never own any firearms again.

One of many. Glad to see you are paying attention.

On a separate note, what exactly is the definition of weapon of mass destruction? I am wondering what that guy actually had in his truck that earns that moniker.

He had a 20 gallon container of gasoline and numerous ignition devices.

I'd be in even more trouble, because my pickup has two gasoline containers, one 20 gallons and the other 12 gallons. And I have 6 ignition devices hidden in the engine compartment.

The original article said IED, an improvised explosive device, not WMD. Looks to me like he'd been improvising and been convicted for it already in Albemarle County this year.

Just for the heck of it, here's a definition of WMD including the original 1937 definition.

"Britannica Concise Encyclopedia: weapon of mass destruction

Weapon with the capacity to inflict death and destruction indiscriminately and on a massive scale. The term has been in currency since at least 1937, when it was used to describe massed formations of bomber aircraft. Today WMDs are nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons — frequently referred to collectively as NBC weapons. Efforts to control the spread of WMDs are enshrined in international agreements such as the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty of 1968, the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972, and the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993. See nuclear weapon; chemical warfare; biological warfare."

"seems to be the political distraction messages"

Are you referring to the powder-filled grenades with firecrackers taped to them or the statement that he'd already done a month in jail this year for similar offenses in Albemarle County?

He's been sending messages, but I'm not sure who he thinks he's distracting.

John

Hmmm. A man, previously convicted of a similar offense, apparently did not learn his lesson and brought an AK-47, a grenade, a pistol, ammunition, and various other "items of concern" to the the heart of DC. Is that about right? And we feel bad for him, why? I'm glad that he was caught before he could carry out whatever he was planning to do. And what he was planning to do... well, I bet that it wasn't (1) on the high road, (2) pro-2A, and (3) anything a rational person would approve of.

The guy was up to no good. He was either a nut who just wanted attention by being arrested with a cache of weapons or he was a nut who wanted attention by using that cache to inflict harm on innocent people. Either way, glad they caught the guy.

"statist"

"Statist - Inspired more by nationalism than by socialism, statism is compatible with state capitalism. Since 1980 statism has been challenged by economic liberalism and structural adjustment reforms. Statism is also referred to as dirigisme and étatisme. France and Japan were classic statist examples."

Okay, if you say so, but I think you're confused about a couple of things.

John

What I was leaning to was the 'instant media hype' that seems to boil over about the 'oh my God he has a gun in his jeep' issue.Granted this guy was a toys short of a happy meal, but give the press an inch sort of thing, and right after Heller...

Most of us here would notice the if and whats going on,many, who dont share our passions on guns, etc would just mark it up to 'whatever' and dont care commonly known as the sheeple message.I am glad they got this guy too...

It makes me want to load a few rifle and pistol cases with clean clothes and cruse D.C. to ask police for directions to the D.C. Hilton. Being tossed into handcuffs for my choice in luggage could be fun…

I could also make a shave kit out of an AR mag tube to go with my Glock 18 mag tube toothbrush holder…
