Deciding on a new rifle

So, night shift sucks, but I do get a 15% pay bump for nights.

So, I'm thinking a new rifle is in order. ARs are as unique as LEGOs and just aren't appealing to me . I'm thinking 5.56 and something a little different.

My short list right now is:
FS 2000
Pros- Bullpup is short and handy even with a 19" barrel.
Seems well engineered. F2000 has passed military trials.
Completly ambidextrous.
Cons- Mag stuffed in armpit.
Reports of failure with the ejection tube.
No bolt hold open.

SCAR-
Pros- Elements of the design stolen from my favorite rifle, the AK.
Reasonable manual of arms.
Cons- Reports of breakages.
Long.
Cancelled by US .mil and may run out of support in future.

Tavor
Pros- Israelis aren't known for making bad weapons.
I like the design.
Bullpup is short and handy.
Cons- Currently vaporware in teh States.
Can only be fired from right shoulder. Changing ejection requires LH bolt.

FS2000 for many of the reasons you mentioned. Also a friend has one. It is a very well made gun.

I would have said scar, but the unknown is a problem.

I have to say that the "space gun" look of the FS 2000 really catches my eye. I'd probably go with that out of your three choices, just to have the biggest "conversation starter" at the range. ;)

well theres the obvious possibilities of Arsenal Ak's and Saigas in .223, but judging by you're stated options, you're probably looking for something a little more upscale.

What about the Sig 556, Bushmaster ACR, or Robinson XCR-L? I haven't heard much about the XCR lately, but they seem to be taking orders on their website.

Also, the Binelli MR1 could be an option, and I believe a civilian version of the Beretta ARX-160 should be coming to the us at some point.

If you're not totally opposed to AR-15 type rifles, the LMT MRP seems like it would be an interesting twist on the AR-15 design with the added plus of switch barrel capability between multiple calibers.

Already have a SLR-107FR that's still working alright for me.

ARs have gotten to be like Barbie or Beanie-Babies to me: I'm just losing interest in all the minutia when to me they are pretty much all the same.

Sounds like you're a man in need of an expensive toy... I'd still say, ACR, Sig 556, or wait for an ARX-160, or Tavor.

I really like the idea of the last two, they both seem like they will be interesting rifles. I probably won't wind up picking up one of either though, there are just too many AR's that do the same thing as well or better floating around for half the price. But on the other hand, if you're looking for an exotic range toy, the plethora of utilitarian options don't really matter.

Personally, I like my toys to be of the bolt action or pistol variety, but I can see where you're coming from.

Ive always thought that while a bullpup seemed like a good idea....It just wasnt a traditional rifle. They look like some sci fi toy, and not really practical for a country boy like me. But I had a chance to handle a Tavor today at a local gun shop and I was amazed. It was small, light and manuverable. Very ergonomic. The mag released and inserted easily and smoothly. The rifle I saw had flip up iron sights that produced fast sight alignment. This gun is COOOOL. It just felt right.

The only two issues I saw where that you cant shoot lefty, I'm Left eye dominant but right handed so I switch from time to time, and the price. $2700 canadian. Thats more than my 3 rifles, my shotgun and 1911 combined. Im not sure if its worth it or not but i could see me using it to down some coyotes and pack in the bush for some fun.

One last plus, for canadians anyways, is that the Tavor is not a restricted firearm. Meaning you dont need a special licence and arent limited to shooting it at the firing range. Alot of AR's are restricted up here which is a shame. IF I find myself with $2700 layin around Ill be picking one of these up.

Had both of the Dae-Woo's. Didn't keep them that long.

I have added one more contestant to the list:

The Gen 2 SIG 556R (7.62x39). It has the advantage of being compatible with my stash of Yugo M67 ammo and AK mags. The Gen 2 is supposed to fix the faults of the Gen 1 like the aluminum mag lug that steel mags eat and being picky about ammo.

Anyone have thoughts on the 556R?

SCAR. Definitely. It's available, it's light, it handles well, it certainly looks very cool, and aftermarket support is catching up to it.

I do like the SCAR but the price!

I could do the FS2000 and a couple cases of ammo and 10 mags and have some left over!

Anyone know if the bore on the 556R is coated? I already have a bunch of AK mags and corrosive Yugo M67. But corrosive ammo, the Pacific NW, and unlined barrels don't play well together.
