I'm torn between getting either a Sig P229R .40 DAK or a XD45 4" Compact as my next pistol. I already have a Sig P239 9mm DAK and a XD9sc. I also have other .40 and .45 pistols, so ammo commonality isn't really an issue here. Either pistol would be a part range/part conceal carry weapon. I figure a slight edge goes to the XD for conceal carry (the XD45 compact has a slightly shorter grip with the ten round mags than the P229R). I'll be honest; I'm starting to lean towards the Sig. I know everyone asks these type of questions on the gun boards all the time, but bare with me.:D Which gun would you pick between the two? Of course I know the obvious answer, "Get both", but I can't do that right now.:p

Between those 2 pistols it would come down to personal preference. You have obviously shot both platforms so you are familier with both. You don't say why you're leaning to the Sig, but that's probably enough to make your decision on given that both would be good, reliable choices for self defense. Now, quit stalling and go buy the pistol.

I have an XD-40 that I dearly love. I like the whole XD lineup for that matter. But man once I got a SIG 229 I understood why it's considered to be in the "Cadillac" class of firearms and the XD has been a shelf and occasional range queen ever since.

Additionally, felt recoil is an extremely subjective thing and we could debate it forever but in my opinion the SIG 229 tames the infamous .40 S&W "snap" better than any handgun I've used before and I've fired a pretty good variety of .40 firearms.

Now some people don't like the 229's grips. Fits me like a glove but then again I can't stand Glock's grips so make sure you handle and fire an example so you know what you are getting before you drop the $$$.

But if it fits then I guess I'm saying if you have the $$$ buy the SIG.

well, I've owned both Sig's and Xd's, and if it were me, I'd be getting the XD--better ergonomics (to me) along with rock soild reliability, accuracy, and a much cheaper price. But that's me--something must be appealing to you about the Sig, and if that's the one that's calling to you, that's the one that's calling

I have two XDs in .40 and I love them. I like the grips better than any other poly gun except for the H&K USP & P2000 ( I'm getting the USC Compact soon )
Anyhow - my XDs have been great guns and the recoil is not a big deal at all. I would say that the Sig you are looking at is probably a slightly better gun as far as reliability, and it's an all metal gun, so it will have less snap - or will it? Some experts say the poly guns flex a little when fired thus reducing the recoil. The XD is a tremendouse value, and I like the grip safe.

I'm still comparing the two. The reason I'm leaning towards the Sig P229R, is that it feels a little bit better in my hand than the XD45c does (though the XD45c feels good as well) and I really like the smooth action of the DAK trigger on the P229 .40s I have been trying. I'm not quite as big on the tradition DA/SA triggers on P229s and P226s (I don't care for the trigger reset on them as much as the DAK models).

I have noticed that Mec-Gar (same company that makes the factory OEM mags for Sig, also for other companys like beretta) makes their own cheaper priced (but just as quality) versions (usually $10-$12 cheaper than OEM factory) of 9mm mags for both the P226 and the P228/P229 models, but no .40/.357 mags for those same models. I went on their website and found that they make other .40 mags (like for the Beretta 96 and the .40 version of the CZ 75), just not for any of the Sig models. Obviously there are a lot of .40 P226s (I know, not as many as 9mm P226s) and P229s, so why not produce their cheaper priced .40/.357 version mags for those Sig models? Oh well, if I do get a .40 P229, I guess spending the extra money for additional Sig factory 12rd. mags (they usually go for around $29 a peice) won't kill me.;)

Get a CPO Sig if you can. I got one recently that's not actually CPO, but it's a used LEO-turn in. Had no holster wear, looked damn close to brand new. Came with night sights, three 12 rd mags, DA/SA trigger, and rail. All in the Sig blue box. Price was $550. I could NOT believe my good luck!

I dont believe that there are any high capacity mags for the 225 as it was not designed for more than the initial round capacity.

Have you considered an HK P2000? It is an excellent weapon. It has the lightweight of the XD as well as the reliability of the Sig. I really recommend it over both guns.

I really like Sigs, and I really like XD's. Personally I'd have to say get the Sig, but it's not by a large margin or anything.

Well, I finally made a decision late last week. I decided to go with the Sig P229R .40 DAK. I picked it up yesterday. Hey boomstik45, it was basically the same kind of deal that you got, except with the DAK trigger system, instead of the traditional Sig DA/SA trigger system. It came with three 12rd. mags, Trijicon night sights (AE (2004) dated) in the blue Sig box (basically a used LE Org. turn-in). The three mags have a few wear marks, but the springs are still fairly stiff still. The gun itself is in LNIB condition (the finish is almost perfect (no holster marks at all), the barrel and the inside of the slide and frame look almost brand new (looks like a fairly low round count on this baby)). The trigger is very smooth and fairly light (feels lighter than my DAK trigger on my P239). I can't wait to shoot this Sig! Here is the link to the website that I ordered it from. Mark, who runs the business there is a great guy to deal with. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Tecumseh, I have a H&K P2000 9mm V2 LEM and you are right, what a wonderfull pistol the P2000 is. I also would recommend it to anyone.

I was asking myself the same question a couple of months ago. I was leaning towards a Sig 239 over the XD 9 subcompact, but then I saw the widths of the 2 pistols. The double stack XD was the same size (thickness) as the single stack Sig because of the grips. I went with the XD and am very happy with it.

I would shoot both, I love my 226 a lot, but when I compared a Glock 19 to a Sig 229, I liked the Glock a lot more. I never thought that I would like the Glock over the Sig............

Which gun would you pick between the two? Of course I know the obvious answer, "Get both", but I can't do that right now

I'd pick neither. I wasn't impressed with Sig or XD. Get HK or Glock.

guns are just about the most subjective thing in the world. I think you made the right choice-- I like my sig 226 heads and tails beyond my xd-45. But when you're dealing with the two platforms in question, either gun will likely give you years and years and worry free and excellent service. IMO...the sig is a much finer and efficient weapon. Asthetics seem to be involved often in these matters. I happen to like the heft of steel, and prefer the sig line's characteristics.

Anywho...congrats!

AZGlock13, congrats on your purchase. I believe you will love that gun. Sigs are generally keepers. The only guns I've ever liked as much in the .40 chambering as the 229 have been the glock 35 and the Smith and Wesson M&P .40. The M&P would give the 229 some competition, but I like my 229R.
