Club or doorstop go with the Ruger. Shooting get the CZ, the ergonimics just dont compare.

I own both: CZ75 and Ruger P89. I am a Ruger stockholder. Buy the CZ.

There are lots of good things to say about the Ruger. I keep one, with tritium sights, in my night stand. The Ruger is my SHTF gun because I won't mind seeing it bagged as evidence. The CZ75 just feels so much better and is noticeably more accurate.

CZs are to fat around the grip!!!

Ergonomically displeasing!!!

I used to have a Ruger KP89D -- I still have 2 CZ's.

The lack of aftermarket parts and accessories is a definite downcheck for the Ruger.

I'd get the CZ, they make some seriously sexy guns. The Ruger autoloaders dont really appeal to me that much aside from the P345,That new ruger SR9 dont look half bad either. They are priced great and built like tanks, good choice for a rugged gun to take outdoors and whatnot not caring if it gets banged up.

i had a p85 ruger and a beretta 92fs gave my dad the p85 i now have a cz40p i like the cz better than the ruger as well more streamlined but thats not to say any thing wrong with the ruger it never had a ftf or a single hicup it was 100 percent reliable when i shot it you are choosing two very nice fire arms have fun with whatever you choose

I would take a CZ-75 or clone or copy any day over the Ruger semi auto centerfire pistols.

The CZ seems to fit and feel better in the hand the Ruger feels like a boy scout whittled the grip out of a scrap 2x4 piece of lumber.

Ruger's are cast CZ's IIRC are forged steel.

Ruger always seems to be upgrading or replacing their semi auto lineup always also seem a step behind all the leading players when it comes to their semi autos.

CZ's have been tested and adopted by many nations how many nations are buying and issuing Rugers to their cops and soldiers?

The CZ design has been copied and is made by a few different companies imitation is one of the sincerest forms of flattery.

How many companies worldwide are copying any of the Ruger semi auto pistol designs in any way shape manner or form?

CZ's are underrated here in the USA but that is rapidly changing hard to argue with success.

The CZ 75 would have to be included in the top ten of handgun designs worldwide IMHO the leading handgun designs are.
1873 Colt SAA
1896 Mauser Broomhandle
Smith & Wesson K frame (insert favorite model here)
P-08 Luger
1911 1911A1 Colt
P-35 Browning High Power
P-38 Walther
CZ-75
Sig 220 226/229
Glock 17/22 19/23

I doubt one will ever see any Ruger semi auto compared equally to any of the icons or milestones of handgun design, The CZ earned its place by being too good of a design to let the cold war bury or the iron curtain crush it going to only gain in popularity as time goes on.

Ruger semi auto centerfire handguns? In three simple words "Just Say No":neener:

There's always one more thing. . . .

Ruger just introduced their SR9. If it's anything like the 345, you have another choice. The 345 grip sold me the gun. Literally put your hands on an SR9 before choosing.

I'd guess the OP is looking for an all steel DA/SA gun. While the SR9 appears to be a pretty nice gun, it is plastic and more like a DAO gun.

You know, I'd just about settled on the CZ, but just maybe the SR9 will depress p89 prices enough to grab both!

buy both if you can.

I have fired the compact-ish ruger p95. for a polymer gun its not bad. Reasonably accurate, tough, reliable, and you can be pretty damn slack on cleaning it. Seems like some good deals around with the new ruger pistol getting released.

The cz, on the other hand, is a spectacular gun if you find the ergonomics of a steel frame with a heavy dose of a good but not incredible impressive "stuff" on it for rust prevention. the grip feels a lot more comfotable and smaller, and realistically a CZ shoots like it should cost twice as much as it does.

buy them both if you can swing the finances.

CZ for all the reasons cited, plus the availability of a really nice 22 LR conversions (the Kadet). Plenty of high cap magazines available cheap, and quite a few after-market parts. If you buy a Ruger and alter it in any way, you may void you warrantee. If you send in an altered Ruger for repairs, they will put it back into factory configuration.

I've had both and like both. Handle them and pick the one that fits your hand the best. (The Ruger looks bigger than it is -- if you actually bother to measure. Neither is a small gun.)

Both lines have their fans, with good cause.

I also own both, I bought the Ruger first used and it is a heavy, solid shooter. It's rugged as hell, but feels like a brick in my hand. The CZ was bought new, and really feels like a well made quality pistol. Both are accurate and reliable, and could both be used as a club when out of ammo. The CZ goes to the range and on vacations, the Ruger stays home in the safe. Mike

rugers are ok guns but they are not even a pimple on the butt of cz! There is nothing a ruger can do that a cz can't do better.

Couldn't have said it better myself? If you must have a 9mm Ruger, at least get the P-95!!!

Here's my take:

Appearance - CZ
Price - Ruger
Features - Ruger
Ergonomics - CZ
Realiability - Even

Given the somewhat even choice I would go with the "home team" and support one of our last few surving American made choices.

Here's my take:

Appearance - CZ - YES
Price - Ruger - OK
Features - Ruger - HUH?
Ergonomics - CZ - YES
Realiability - Even - Possibly

Not doubting you, but please explain what features that the Ruger has over the CZ besides possibly a decocker. If that is it I surely would not put the Ruger over the CZ.

Besides you forgot about the ease of concealing which goes to CZ, based on the guns overall size.

Price - Ruger

I double checked this one.

Academy is online listing the Stainless P89 for 409.00 and the CZ-75 for 406.00. There may be local price variations, but it appears that both firearms are at or near the same price.

I had the P89, as my first handgun.
I originally was ok with it, but after a side-by-side comparison
with a S&W compact 9mm, a Beretta 92, and a few others, I really
disliked it. Bought myself a Glock, and I love it way more then the
P89. I do not question their quality or accuracy, I do not know
enough to make those statements.
But what I do know is that TO ME, the P89 felt klunky, sloppy,
loose, and poorly handled the recoil next to other handguns.
Everytime I fired it, I felt like it went "KA-CHUNK".
It just wasn't the right gun for me.

I've had numerous Rugers and CZ's-specifically, a Ruger P85, P89, P89TH, P90 Police Special, P94TH, SP101, GP100 3", GP100 4", Security Six, M77RSI, and a P97, for the Rugers; regarding CZ's, I've had 2 CZ75B's, a CZ83 .380 and a CZ83 9mm Makarov. In my opinion, handle and fire both guns if possible. Recent offerings from both manufacturers have been excellent, as is aftermarket support. Accuracy and fit and finish has been significantly improved on current P89's, and they also come with improved stainless steel magazines. The ergonomics of the P89 are not as bad in my opinion as others have alluded-I find the P89's safety/decocker significantly easier to use than the safety on the CZ75. Unless you have the CZ75 decocker version, lowering the hammer on a chambered round for a double-action first shot requires pulling the trigger. Although CZ has reshaped the trigger, it is still placed somewhat far foward for the first double action shot as well. Concealment is a wash regarding both guns-more dependant upon the holster chosen than the gun per se (as is the case with most guns, I've found). Although both are well-built of quality materials, I would rate the Ruger just a bit better for durability and reliability in my experience. There really isn't a bad choice to be made here-again, the key thing is choosing the gun that works the best for you.

Best, Jon

Funny, after putting Hogue grips on all my Rugers they actually feel better than the CZs I've handled. I have 6 Rugers, no CZs.

simply put, both are great guns, so go to a few local gun shops and feel them both and get whichever you like better :)

Whoa, looks like this thread got bumped. :)
I got to handle the CZ and a blued Ruger the other day. Side by side the CZ seems to have much better fit and finish, the only issues I found with it were 1) Manipulating the slide release felt awkward, but maybe I was doing it wrong, Any tips? And 2) the Mag release was stiff, I'm guessing that would loosen up with use, and i was thinking about going with an extended one anyway.

The Ruger's sights weren't nearly as nice, and it feels gritty, not just the trigger but pretty much every moving part, compared to the CZ. I'm not sure if the stainless finish would alleviate that at all, but I'm thinking no. Weight was the other thing, I think the two guns weigh pretty much the same on a scale, but with the Ruger you could really feel it, maybe the CZ's ergonomics help? I do like the mag release on the P89 better though.

Right now I'm planing to grab a CZ75b from Bud's, unless I find it for less elsewhere, and looking to pick up the P89 stainless when I see a good deal somewhere down the line.
