Looks like I’m getting shut out this season. I had a few chances, but like this one, they’ll be better next year so I let them walk. Didn’t take any does as I kept waiting for the big buck that never showed up

I did get a call yesterday from my taxidermist saying my mounts from last season were ready to be picked up. It almost made up for getting goose egged this year, except that I’m out of deer meat. Anyway, I like how they came out.

Very nice nature boy! How is that new deer slayer shooting for you? If it were mine I’d shoot it often and every chance I got
then again being a .308 it is so outdated and out of touch with modern times think (6.5 anything here) I doubt I’d tell people I shot it for fear of being called old and outdated :neener::rofl::D

I say that in a joking manner I have a .308 and love mine

Just looked in the freezer and I have 1lb of ground meat left. It’s going into chili I’m making today to eat while we watch my Saints kick the crap out of the Rams.

A note on getting shut out. It’s a lesson not to take anything for granted. Where I hunt the deer are numerous and it’s not unusual to see 100+ in the winter wheat fields. Last season I shot the 8 point 15 min after getting to the field on my first hunt. Shot the 10 point 3 days later.

This year we saw a fraction what what we’ve seen in the past. The the prevailing theory for why that was is an unusually wet fall produced an abundance of natural feed. As a result, the deer had enough to eat near their bedding areas, therefore, didn’t move around much. Bottom line: enjoy the successes, they aren’t guaranteed to repeat

Nice ones NB.

Let several small ones walk in 2017. Freezer without venison I said screw it last yr and popped the first 8 that came by.
Small, but I had a "new to me" rifle ('63 Rem 760 in .35 rem)........so had to blood it ;)
Shot on the run.......was kinda like playing w a cat..........movement, 8 pts..............I just had to.

I had good bucks all over me for three seasons. In 2017 I passed up 4 bucks one morning before taking a nice 11 pt. Had nice bucks on all of my cameras. 2018 was completely different. Only had a couple of nice bucks on camera, both at night, and finally took a small 8 pt. I guess that is why they call it hunting.

I agree with Hookeye....... Those through the scope pictures are great. Swarovski optics are first class all the way. Buddy of mine has a Swarovski and the optics are stunning. I sometimes get to look through Swarovski binoculars and spotting scopes and they make me want to own one someday.

Over the years I have made myself a rule: being my family eats deer meat well , I shoot the first deer I see for the season!! I've caught myself in the paradox of not wanting to shoot a doe late season because of the rut and messing up a chance on a good buck while feeling the need to replenish my deer meat in the freezer! Its happened too many times. Now , I dont care if I just loaded my gun opening day and a deer steps out 10 seconds later, I shoot it! Lol. It makes for a more relaxed season! Get it out the way early because it can get tough when those things figure out theres people trying to kill them!
