ELKINS -- A Randolph County man has been charged with murder following the shooting death of his girlfriend's ex-husband Friday night.

Authorities said Steven Dan Snider, 49, shot Leslie M. Woodford after a domestic dispute.

According to sheriff's deputies, Woodford was finalizing a messy divorce with his ex-wife.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday, deputies Mark T. Brady and Richard T. Swisher responded to a 911 call at a home on Sully Road near Alpina.

Woodford went to his ex-wife's father's home, kicked in the front door and pointed a handgun at the 76-year-old man.

Woodford was threatening to kill the family, authorities said.

The father attempted to defend himself with a 12-guage shotgun.

Woodford confronted his ex-wife, but left the scene before authorities arrived.

Brady said Woodford then went to a home on South Henry Avenue in Elkins.

Deputies said Woodford busted down his door and shot at Snider.

Snider fired back and fatally wounded Woodford. Woodford was airlifted to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where he was pronounced dead.

Snider is now charged with his murder.

Both incidents are under investigation by the Elkins Police Department, the Randolph County Sheriff's Department and the West Virginia State Police.

Either the facts as reported are incorrect or someone has an axe to grind.
The account clearly demonstrates justified self defense. Unless the evidence
clearly and completely show otherwise this is a wrongful prosecution.

Why is he retarded for killing a man that kicked in his door and shot at him?

Pray tell, what would you have done?:p

Dial 9-1-1, of course.

Didn't Rebecca Peters tell Wayne LaPierre that the police are there to protect us from bad people? What's the matter with you?

It just doesn't sound right. Might be attributable to poor reporting. Self defense is justified if an armed invader enters your home and threatens to kill you. Of course, the Police should have been there along with Brady, Feinstein, Schumer and Kennedy to prevent this incident of Gun Violence.

Most home defense type shootings in maryland result in a charge against the homeowner, normally manslaugther, not necesarily murder 1, its a really crappy byproduct of our judicial system, but in a lot of areas police are required to charge and investigate, though most of the time the charges are dropped via hearing or araignment prior to a trial. Not sure if there is some other info the police have and we don't, but I hope if it is as it seems the charges drop quick.

It sounds like they are both retarded.

Ya know what?? I'm new here too, and I'm going OT for a sec, and I'll take whatever punishment the mods deem appropriate.

But I gotta know, just when did it become socially appropriate to call someone or their actions "retarded"?

Lord know, I'm not a politically correct type person myself, and I have no axe to grind on this point. But it irks me. Badly.

Okay, off my soapbox. I encourage others who read this to NOT respond. I don't want to drag anyone else down with me. And I apologize to anyone I may have offended... unless you're offended by me not believing it's proper to make light of someone's disability.

My guess - the reporter was told "Excusable homicide" and interpretted it as "he's being charged with murder".

Most likely getting charged as murder 1 as it it his girlfriends ex husband. Could have been one of those premeditated murder plots, :barf: , were the boyfriend/lover suckers the soon to be ex husband into trying to kill the lover in order for lover to kill hubbie off.

Seriously, a stupid DA who must have been co valedictorian in his graduating class with the DA who screwed up the Duke Lacrosse team.

Sounds like things could get legally messy. They should let Grissom conduct the investigation. He could sort out the entire matter in 45 minutes ...

Without knowing all the facts, I'm not going to comment on this. It often turns out in situations like this, there is more than meets the eye.

And Doggy Daddy, I'm behind you 100% on this. It seems like calling someone or something retarded or a retard has gained some level of acceptance. I often bite my tongue when I hear/see it, sometimes I tear people a new one. I have two nieces who are retarded and they are the sweetest, most sincere people I know. Most people could learn a lot from them. There's also a young girl in my neighborhood who's retarded. I see some kids pick on her and it breaks my heart. These are the ones who wind up having a new one torn, courtesy of Mr White. My kids have been taught better, apparently most parents don't care.

I checked the news story this morning and there doesn't seem to be any new information, but I'll report it when I hear it. It bothers me that if I have someone crash through my door AND SHOOTS AT ME that I'll be charged with murder if I'm able to put him down. I still smell a rat!

I talked to the ex-mayor who told me there were "legal conditions" that required the charge of murder. He fully expected the charge to be dropped at araingment. That really sucks to sit in jail in your orange jump suit because you defended yourself.

K3: A Castle bill unanimously passed the WV senate this month and is in the house judiciary now. There are at least three Castle bills in the House that haven't been read yet. One of them (HB 2264) is quite complete, relating to justifiable use of force, including deadly force, in the protection of persons and property. It also includes a clause to preclude civil actions. Hopefully, they will be melded and passed this year...

Oh yeh, sierrabravo45 - for your information, the guy is NOT retarded.:fire:

The charges have been dismissed without prejudice. Dan is my uncle and this has been a very strange and difficult experience for our family. Stranger still is finding it being discussed on a web forum. We are just glad to know that we weren't the only ones who thought that he deserved to come home.
Thanks.

rh, welcome to the forum, and I want to say I'm happy to hear all has turned out for the best. My sympathy goes to Dan Snyder for having to contend with murder charges and several nights in jail when he could have used the immediate comfort of family and friends to help him get over this tragedy.

WV simply doesn't have any set laws (except a ton of case law) concerning self-defense shootings. Hopefully, all that will change this year with passage of several Castle Doctrine bills in the legislature.

Hoo Rah another one for the good guys, glad to see everything worked out as well as it could have considering the circumstances. Stick around for a while, we'd be glad to have ya!

Thank God the charges were dropped! From the initial news report there was so little info I chose nt to comment. rh I hope you and your family are well and particularily your Uncle is O'k.

I will pass along your kind remarks to my uncle. I am sure that he will appreciate it very much. He may even be interested in this forum himself. He is just recently moved back to WV from over a decade in VT. What a welcome...
