Shootout kills sheriff's wife, deputy, 2 suspects
Story Highlights
• NEW: Serial killer confessed to killing sheriff's father 30 years ago
• Suspects kill sheriff's wife as she returns home
• Deputy responds to call and is shot to death by suspects
• Sheriff, other deputies kill two suspects

MARIANNA, Florida (AP) -- The wife of a sheriff whose father was gunned down by a confessed serial killer 27 years ago was killed in a shootout at their home that also left three other people dead.

Mellie McDaniel, the wife of Jackson County's sheriff, died Tuesday evening along with a sheriff's deputy and two suspects.

Authorities said they believe the suspects targeted Sheriff John McDaniel's home in Marianna, in the Florida Panhandle.

"The community should not be concerned. We believe this was not a random case," State Attorney Steve Meadows said at a news conference late Tuesday.

More than 100 law officers searched the area surrounding the McDaniels' home into Wednesday morning, though Meadows said authorities did not believe there were additional suspects. He said the search was being conducted out of an abundance of caution.

The shootings began around 5 p.m. when Mellie McDaniel arrived home. The sheriff was notified that "intruders entered the area around his home," Meadows said.

Mellie McDaniel was shot moments later. A deputy also was shot.

Other officers, including the sheriff, arrived and killed the two suspects in an exchange of gunfire, Meadows said. The names of the deputy and the suspects were not released.

Meadows said he could not say whether McDaniel fired his weapon. The sheriff was not injured.

Meadows would not discuss a potential motive for the shootings.

"We believe the sheriff's home was selected and targeted," he said.

Edwin Douglas said he was taking a nap at his brother's house, across the street from the McDaniels', when gunfire awoke him.

"I heard 15 to 20 gunshots," Douglas told The News Herald of Panama City. "It was quite a bit of excitement. About 20 police cars showed up."

McDaniel's father was gunned down while working at a Jackson County gas station in 1980. McDaniel, then a sheriff's deputy, responded to a robbery call to find his father, former Malonen Mayor John P. McDaniel Jr., shot to death. Serial killer Henry Lee Lucas later confessed.

McDaniel spoke at a news conference in 1990 when Lucas was extradited from Texas to Florida.

"We never quit working a murder case," McDaniel said then. "We will always continue to work any and every murder case until we come to a happy conclusion -- that conclusion being the person who committed the heinous crime will go to justice."

Wow. This is right around the corner from me. What a worthless situation to be in. I wonder why he was targetted.

I understand some states prohibit or are trying to prohibit off-duty LEO's from carrying ... this story illustrates why they (and everyone else) should be allowed to carry. Some people make enemies in their line of work.:(

Doesn't the new national CCW law for peace officers trump local policies restricting carry? It was my understanding that it does.

Bad situation all the way around.

Confessed Serial Killer

***?

They leave confessed serial killers running loose?

Or is it that they just never had this guy in custody in the first place?

Which begs, how did they get a confession from him?

Let's turn over another rock and see how many unanswered questions we can find there . . .

Greebly,
The story is worded quite strangely/confusingly, but from what i gather, the person who confessed to murdering this sherrif's father 30 years ago is not involved in the current situation; the writer just threw in the previous story about his father and the serial killer as an extra piece of...totally extraneous information :p If i'm decoding further, the deputy who was killed was not related to the wife of the sherriff -- and the sherriff arrived after his wife was killed and shot the suspects.

Men show up and shoot wife of sherriff, and a deputy that is at the scene..story is not clear as to if the deputy is shot at same time as wife of sheriff or after
sheriff and additional deputy arrive and kill suspects
tons of police arrive and search the area

Read the story again. You've got the details mixed up. The serial killer reference was to a murder case 27 years ago.

Here's a better version of the story:

AP said:
MARIANNA, Fla. - Investigators were trying to determine Wednesday why two people shot and killed a sheriff's wife and a deputy before officers killed the suspects at the sheriff's home.

The Tuesday evening attack apparently targeted the home of Jackson County Sheriff John McDaniel and his wife, Mellie McDaniel.

"The community should not be concerned. We believe this was not a random case," State Attorney Steve Meadows said at a news conference late Tuesday, declining to discuss a motive.

More than 100 officers searched the area surrounding the McDaniels' home into early Wednesday, although most had left by late morning. Meadows said authorities did not believe there were other attackers, but the search was conducted as a precaution.

The shootings began around 5 p.m. when Mellie McDaniel arrived home. She managed to call her husband's office and report intruders in the area, but she and one of the deputies sent to the house were killed, said Joe Grammer, a spokesman for Meadows.

Other officers arrived and killed the two suspects in an exchange of gunfire, Meadows said. The sheriff was there but Meadows said he could not say whether he fired his weapon. The sheriff was not injured.

The names of the dead deputy and the suspects were not released.

Edwin Douglas said he was taking a nap at his brother's house, across the street from the McDaniels', when gunfire woke him.

"I heard 15 to 20 gunshots," Douglas told The News Herald of Panama City. "It was quite a bit of excitement. About 20 police cars showed up."

Ah, I See

Yeah, much clearer.

Tough gig.

Gotta wonder if this was out of the blue or if there was some kind of run-up to the incident involving threats.

Damn.

Anybody wanna bet on the rap sheets of the two bad guys?

Who were not in jail? Who were running around loose, having, in all probability, "paid their debt" for some earlier crime?

Inquiring minds . . .

Condolences to the Sheriff and the family of the deputy as well as his brothers in law enforcement.

deputy killed

Anyone know why there was a deputy with the wife when she arrived home?
maybe the sheriff had some previous viable threats and was trying to protect her? Tis a scary thing when something like this happens..all the more reason to carry

There wasn't as I read it. She called 911 and the deputy was the first responder to arrive at the house.

It's unfortunate that this is happening. The good thing is the community is rallying in show of support for what had happened. I'm in Wewahitchka, Fl, about 50 or so miles away from Marianna, so this hits close to home for me.

It's surprising to see how bad things are these days. Just in Panama City..25 miles from me, there are 5245 offenders on Supervised Probation.

To make a long story short, my wife is attending the next concealed weapons class.
