What is the meaning of the term in the white? I've heard it used when refering to a rifle barrel (i.e. new barrel in the white), but have never been able to locate a definition of the term.

Thanks.

Huh, interesting.
This is a term applied to medieval armor as well.
I thought it must have been an original 14th century term, but now that I know it's applied to firearms, it makes me think it may be a general term in semi-modern use for bare iron/steel.
The armor term usually denotes a high polish though - the higher the polish, the more rust resistant the metal is, since by polishing it you're decreasing surface area.
Is that true for firearms as well?
Anyone know of any other uses?

With firearms the term is not related to polishing, as even a bead-blasted part will be referred to as "in the white."

Also, and this is a personal observation, it is used more often when referring to carbon steel parts which *should* be coated to prevent rust, rather than stainless steel parts which are commonly left in the white.
