Eventhough my number of posts doesn't reflect it, I have been a member here, and at TFL, for some time. I prefer to read more than write; usually what I want to say has already been said, anyways. However, I need some help focusing my thoughts.
I am a 39 year old male, prior military, father of two, who recently returned to college. It didn't take long to realize my fellow students are from the nintendo generation and the instructors are, indeed, quite liberal. I also realize my "...cold, dead hands" rhetoric is too abrasive for the campus mentality.
Simply put, I need some pithy, articulate, sarcastic, (and any other adjective that's appropriate) definitions of "gun control."

IS ANYONE DOWN-RANGE?
All clear, fire away.

Thanks

They wrote the second amendment to guarantee all the others, like the first which should be near and dear to the hearts of the inteligencia.

You should'nt have to go too far to find examples of what happens when gun control runs wild: crime wave in the UK, Hitler, Stalin et al

And you don't have to go very far to see what happens when law abiding citizens are allowed to carry concealed: crime DOWN.

Pick up John Lott's book for the relevant stats and counter arguments (like more kids die in 5 gallon buckets than from handguns - so lets make them illegal.)

They may not listen to you right away, but plant the seed. If they are true students, they should be willing to learn.

Edited To Add: I guess I haven't really replied to your post with this . . . one of the members here has an interesting tag line that goes something like this:

Gun Control: The premise that a woman found in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose , is morally superior to allowing that same woman to defend her life with a firearm.

It's hard to crystalize the thought without the emotion into an intuitively obvious catch phrase.

Proper gun control means the ability to operate a firearm safely, accurately, skillfully, and consistently.

In the common vernacular, gun control is about burdening and punishing the law abiding with meaningless 'laws' using the excuse of trying prevent 'gun violence and crime'. This is wrong on many levels. As inanimate objects, guns are incapable of violence or crime, afterall, assault is a behavior, not a device. Further, since criminals, by definition, don't obey the law, gun control laws are an oxymoron and a symptom of social insanity, i.e. doing the same thing over and over (some 23,000 gun control olaws on the books) expecting a different outcome.

Long & short, you've got to get them to think, not 'feel', and deconstruct from there. Good luck

Don't bother.

They are too interseted in the opposite sex and beer. Wait until their first paycheck and student loan payment. Or when their job gets shipped to India. Then the light bulb will come on.

For most people it takes first hand experience.

Sorry I don't know who to give credit to for that. It was emailed to me years ago.

(1) Control: Hitting what you aim at.

(2) Those who beat their swords into plowshares will soon be plowing for those who didn't!

When I get into a discussion and find I am talking with a real anti-gun person I ask, "If someone is going to kill you or rob you is it ok to resist with violence?" Next is, "At what level do you think you should resist?" Next is, "If you face three seventeen year old boys with baseball bats can you prevail?" The foundation is then in place to ask them how can they win in that situation.

Note, seventeen year olds, juveniles will not be punished in a meaningful manner.

Take your antacids before this conversation. Do some deep breathing excercises, and remain in control of your emotions. This conversation will SHOCK you. The number of sheep in this country shocks me. I do not think they will be lying to you, I think they really believe that it is bad to resist at any time short of death.

Gun control is simply horribly failed logic.

Their problem is that they want to stop BGs from using guns (this also hints that they are afraid of an inanimate object, another flaw). Since it is already illegal to kill someone or rob someone regardless of the tool in use, does it make sense to make another law targeting the tool?

Legality is a binary -- something is either legal or it isn't. You can't make something illegal more illegal.

Now consider that people who will murder, rob, and rape do not have any regard for what the law says. BAD GUYS HAVING GUNS, OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS ILLEGAL, IS A GIVEN!!! So to supposedly "make it harder" for them to get guns, they make MORE laws, which only affect those who follow them -- the good guys. It's punishing one person for the actions of another.

It is, at every point of thought, horribly flawed logic.

LayinLow...

"Simply put, I need some pithy, articulate, sarcastic, (and any other adjective that's appropriate) definitions of "gun control.""

Why don't you simply ask them, "Why do you distrust your fellow man so much?"

The AWB a timely topic...lots of talk on college campuses about it.

When a person says that they support the AWB, ask them to "describe the Assault Weapons Ban, and explain the firearms that are affected by it"....

Do this in front of a large, captive group (read: college classroom). You'll pretty easily get an anti down to the point where they'll say, "Well, I just think that all guns should be banned".

a. They don't know what the provisions of the ban are.
b. They don't know what guns are affected.
c. They can't accurately describe what constitutes an Assault Weapon.
d. They have no knowledge of the subject.

And yet they support it and are vocal about it? Even other students can see that they're a shaggy dog. (lots on the outside, nothing underneath.)

"Gun Control" is a euphemism for incremental citizen disarmanent.

Gun "Control" is not about guns at all, it is about control.

Only free men are armed, only armed men are free.

A an armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.

Hope this helps.

Molon Labe!

I tell liberals that instead of beating around the bush with silly things like gun control, 3-strikes, sentence enhancements, bla bla bla, we should make laws against crime.
