I know that interstate transfers have to go through an FFL. Do I have to ship a handgun via UPS, FedEx, etc or can I deliver it to the out of state FFL myself? For example, I live in Nebraska. Supposing I have a buyer in Iowa, can I take the gun to an Iowa FFL and have him do the transfer to the Iowa buyer?

Legally you may. However, some FFLs might not, as a matter of business practice, want to do it that way. It's best to check with the transfer FFL ahead of time.

I myself and others I know have had issues with UPS , when it comes with firearms related items! I ship through FedEx now when I need to send an item !

This. You can do it legally, but call ahead. Some FFLs may not want out-of-state walk-ins for transfer business. IOW, you can do it legally, but they can also legally refuse it.

I recommend you make sure you're transporting the gun in accordance with the law of the state you're passing through or going to. Just in case, of course. Federal "safe harbor" transport doesn't cover all circumstances.

Years ago, I had a S&W 686 that my dad really liked , but he didn't have a pistol license in NY and didn't plan on getting one, as he was planning on retiring elsewhere. He moved to Pennsylvania shortly after this and got to know a local dealer. I was going to visit and brought the 686 to the dealer and no problems....for him.

When I went to the pistol license bureau, which is a 45-60 minute drive from my place, I got the "you have to go through a dealer to do that " speech. I told the officer that the handbook they gave me clearly states that I can do this. "Well, I'm just letting you know that we can revoke your license if you do that".

I ditched my pernit and sold the two pistols I had on that license when I decided to move to NYC. I knew I wasn't getting one in the five boroughs. I've been waiting more than half a century to leave NY....less than 4 months to go. Looking forward to moving to a state where you don't have to worry about free exercise of your rights, although options get fewer every year.

If only I could decide where we are moving. My wife wants to know. Nothing like winging it.

That will depend a lot more than just gun ownership - weather taxes, cost of living quality of life, small town vs big, etc. I have spent almost 45 years living in NV first, then FL (after being born in NYC and college in GA)
Both have good gun laws and both have no state income tax-a plus in my book.
