Last Saturday, I went with Andrew and Lyle Wyatt out to the Desert Marksman range for an informal match. The scenario was a moving target set with 2 bad guys edge to edge. In stage one there was a hostage centered in front the pair of bad guys leaving half of each exposed. The target set moved at a little over 3 feet per second over a horizontal distance of about 50 feet. Shooter was at 100 yards, freestyle position, and was allowed 4 shots (2 at each bad guy) when the target set moved from behind cover from right to left and disappeared behind cover. Then the set moved back to the right with another 4 shot opportunity. Hostage hits were scored as penalties of double their ordinary hit value. If the hostage was not hit on either pass then the shooter received a bonus of double his hits on the targets (Major was scored 10, 8, 6 and Minor was scored 10, 7, 5).

We had tons of fun. I shot my M1, and ended up placing 7th of 20 shooters, with the Wyatts kicking my tail with ease.

Where's the Desert Marksman range, and why didn't I hear about it until more than a year after I moved away from there?

That sounds like a great time!

What type of rifles were being used by others? How rare was it for the "hostage" to be hit?
