any Michigan folks on the board? recently relocated to the western Detroit burbs and am looking for a good sportsman/gun club to join

had Youngs longshot back in Indiana and didn't know how rare those kind of places are

appreciate it..

How far west of Detroit? Which town?

I know of Detroit Sportsmans congress, Western Wayne Sportsmens club, Fenton Lakes Sportsmens club, Linden sportsmens club, Bluewater sportsmans club and Lapeer county sportsmans club (my home range). Not sure how close these all are, but most have regular shooting events that may interest you.

Washtenaw Sportsmans Club in Ypsilanti is wonderful. Not sure if they have a waiting list for new members right now, but would be worth looking into. They have a nice 600 yard range.

If you like long distance, WSC and Blue Water (up near Port Huron) are your closest options, by close to 100 miles.

I've heard that many clubs in metro Detroit have long waiting lists or are constantly crowded. Some of the clubs up as far as Lansing get Detroit area members because of this. All hearsay, I live west of Lansing so am in a different environment.

Close Quarters Tactical at 23 and hayes in utica has a really nice indoor range you can even shoot 50 BMG in it. Pretty decent selection on the shelves too

belleville, mi is our new location.. quite a change for us country folks

Belleville is actually pretty country for the area, but it sure aint' country... i am getting ready to call the WWC sportsman's club and chat.. thanks for the link for Washtenaw, going to check in there also

and might drive up and shoot the range in utica today - don't have my CCW permit for MI yet, have to take the course so long gun only for a while

appreciate everyones responses..

Maybe I misunderstood your comment about not having your CPL but that shouldn't stop you from shooting handguns at the range.

Also there are indoor ranges closer. Top Gun in Taylor and the Firing Line in Westland are both decent places to shoot indoors.

without my carry permit I didn't think i should transport a hand gun to and from a range
appreciate any feedback

You can transport it as long as it's unloaded and in a case or in the trunk. Oh and it has to be yours as in registered with the State Police under your name.

P.S.
I moved from Michigan last year. Check http://handgunlaw.us if you want to find the actual code.

thanks

i'd prefer not to register anything, so i'll wait til i get my CPL to transport

Well, not to go too far down this road publicly but you don't really have a choice if you want to be a legal gun owner. Especially after you get your CPL.

thanks

i'd prefer not to register anything, so i'll wait til i get my CPL to transport

CPL or not, MI law requires hand guns to be registered. It's been that way for as long as I can remember.

I thought detroit was largely abandoned, couldn't pay the police, and was basically turning into a mad max movie. Couldn't you pimp out your car with spikes and things and just go shooting in an abandoned neighborhood? Last I heard there was a 4 hour response time to a 911 call. That's plenty of time to order a pizza, have a great day at the range and police your brass. Just make sure you have a safe backstop. Maybe an overturned bus or a Blockbuster video?

ugly news on the MI requirements

guess the bulk of my handguns stay in Dixie and I only bring up a couple and register.. could be worse

the D is quite a place. when you are downtown you'd never think that the rest of the city is such a craphole.. Downtown is actually quite nice with a lot of fun stuff to do. Just don't want to get out into the surrounding neighborhoods or stay past about 1 am..

could have been worse, i could have got relocated to Chicago.. have to look at the bright side of things

The lower east side where I grew up is abandoned. Block after block with but one or two houses left standing, and only half of those occupied. If Detroit was smart they would open it up to daily fee pheasant hunting, the entire place is overrun with pheasants with all the over grown weed lots.

BTW, there is a range called Top Gun in Taylor which is probably closest to you to go to shoot. Not been there personally since I live on the NE side, but I hear it is nice.

Big difference between "the city of Detroit" and the metro Detroit area. The "city of" is a cess pool of corruption and dysfunction. Outside city limits, the metro area is actually a pretty nice place to live.

But yeah, you have to register handguns in MI within 10 days of bringing them into the state . Pretty easy to do. Go to your local PD and pick up a form, fill it in as yourself as both the buyer and seller (I know you are not buying or selling anything, that's just the way the form is). Turn a copy back into the PD and you are good to go.

thanks for the feedback - ill stop in tomorrow on the way back to MI and pick up forms at the PD..

Whats left of the packard plant offtown.

As an added bonus, you can get tactical cqc training onsite most days after 4pm. Plentiful targets, lots of backstops, and nary a concerned citizen for miles.

A lot of Commercial ranges near you are not that friendly to rifles. My understanding is because they have steel bullet traps, and someone is always bringing in steel core and blowing holes in their traps. They may require you to shoot rifles with ammo you buy from them. Top Gun in Taylor is an example. I like shooting Pistols there. They have weekly Bowling Pin matches there, and also IDPA when the weather is bad.

Wolverine in Brownstown Township will let you shoot just about anything there, because their traps are tire crumb rubber.

The problem with these indoor ranges is that they only have about 25 yards for rifle, and that tells you whether the rifle functions, but not how well it shoots. Some of the clubs have long enough ranges to see if a rifle will shoot. Monroe Rifle & Pistol has 200 yards, Washtenaw has 600, and Western Wayne has 200, IIRC.

Some of the DNR ranges are worth looking at, but all I have been to are 100 yards. Island Lake is one you should look at.
