DEVEL 9MM...Smith and Wesson Chop Job

I have got the chance to pay under $400 for a S&W Devel 9mm. It is in very good condition. The pistol is stamped Property of US Navy. Any idea of the real value or is it pretty close to it now? I may buy it tomorrow just because of the Devel logo on the grips. Also has the cut in the grips and all three mags to check ammo. Any help on this would be great.
 
Buy. Now. Immediately.

You can resell it for at least twice that much. Devel guns aren't as swank as the ASP, but the workmanship is equally good.
 
You should send Wayne Novak an e-mail after you buy it, he is putting together a very cool Devel collection and I believe is putting together a book about Devel.
 
Thanks all.......the tag said its a Smith and Wesson 1950 something Navy 9mm....I believe the exact price was $379. 3 mags, 2 holsters. I think its getting bought on the badge tomorrow!!
 
That is starting to get scary cheap and resemble a pig in a poke. What other Devel modifications does it have besides window grips? What is the base model gun? I know of no S&W 9mm that would have "1950" in the designation.

I think Devel used to offer some very basic modifications to Model 39's; sort of like a reliabilty package, maybe a trigger tune-up; just real basic stuff. And as an extra they added the Devel custom grips. I don't know anything about the U.S. Navy Property markings.
 
Okay...sorry for some of the misinformation previously....S&W Model 56, 9mm with a 3.75" barrel. Wish I knew how to upload pic's from my cellphone. Minor surface rust on the barrel where the caliber is stamped and minor surface rust in some of the fluting on the slide. Hammer is bobbed. Trigger guard is hooked on the front. 2 original mags and a third non-cut. couldn't tell that the third wasn't cut as Gander Mtn. had it zip tied into the shoulder holster. Shoulder holster included. All edges are rounded off. Tag says Model 56 Navy...which is where I was mistaken on prior life history of the gun, sorry bout that one guys. By the way...I put a down payment on it tonight!!!

And yes...as soon as it is mine.....I'll take a bunch of photos and post them. I'll give it a through cleaning(just needs a good wipe down) and then I'll pose it for all to see.

Hey Jim....I just visited Wayne Novak's site....how about I tell you that it is definitely a Full House 59?? It is...I just compared the picture on my phone to the one on his site. It's a match..line for line. Like you said...ignorant store clerk and a label maker!
 
I would suspect a Model 59 that had the Navy marking on it, before the Devil conversion happened to it.

Still be a pretty rare bird though.

Hey rcmodel.....that was a mistake on my part that i explained earlier as an ignorant clerk armed with a CL.III select fire label maker. I was going by what the tag read. It is indeed a Mdl. 59 Full House Devel. Once I remembered to bring my badge and ID into the store with me, the salesman brought the gun out of the case to show me. Heck, even I wasn't sure what the gun was until I was pointed to Wayne Novak's collection. I did know what the DEVEL logo meant, I just wasn't sure of the S&W model. Pic's will probably be after Christmas when I pick it up and get it added to my permit.

Anybody know just how rare are these models? I personally haven't a clue. Any other info of actual approximate value?

I used to see Devels on occasion at some of the area gunshows when I lived in Ohio many years ago. Even back then, they were too rich for my wallet, and all I could do was admire the craftmanship and quality of those highly customized guns. I don't think they made that many Model 59's as the Model 39 design was more conducive to concealed carry. And when S&W began making their own compact versions, I think the company went more to M1911 customization, both for CCW and competition. If you got one of their full house Model 59's for $379, then I would have to say you got one incredibly fantastic deal there.
 
Yeah....I guess the heck so!! Now should I go buy a lottery ticket or am I pushing it??!! LOL!! I'm gonna go down there tonight to take some pictures of it with a digital camera and see if I can upload them to this thread. I'll be back later guys. They did not show up you can load them onto a photo site. Than place the html in the body of the message or a link IR email them to me. I have a large photo storage online I can host them for free. Todd
