I'm looking for a range in the DFW area that allows FMJ from rifles? The farthest I would be shooting out to would be 200 yards. Anybody know of anything? Buying hunting/match/ballistic/HP/etc ammo for basic paper punching gets really expensive, really quickly. :fire:

It's so annoying isn't it? Does FMJ really damage backstops that much? I finally had to find a range way down in Cleburne so I could shoot what I wanted without worrying about it.

I do know that Gibson Outpost in Mesquite advertises "4 FMJ ranges" on their website.

Yes, it's extremely annoying. I called Gibson Outpost to get updated information since the webpage I found is down...got an unpleasant man on the phone who acted like my questions were absurd and unnecessary (range fees, hours of operation, etc). Despite this, it still seems like a viable option for me considering they allow FMJ at 100 yards which is what I shoot 90% of the time.

After some searching online, I see LOTS of people give this place mixed reviews. I keep trying to tell myself that shooting $6/box ammo vs. $20/box ammo for my .223 would be well worth any 'annoying' or 'rude' behavior from the folks who own the range. I might have to run up there sometime and give 'em a shot

Parker County Sportsman's club allows fmj.
I checked it out and that looks perfect except that it's 1.5 hours from where I live. I'm more North Dallas than Fort Worth

Before I rolled my own for my ar I shoot the tula ammo from CTD in Mckinney for about 6bux a box hollow points which most ranges will be ok with. Yes Gibons sucks I will not go back. If you are shooting a semi auto you can not load more than 3 rounds at a time, and pistol you can not load more than five at a time.

LOL yep that's Gibson's :)

I won't go back there myself because of him. I was shooting my 1918 BAR there one day and he came out to lecture me on how they didn't allow .50 caliber (It's 30.06) and when I told him it wasn't .50 he told me that he carried one of those in "the war". So I was trying to be nice and put that away, pulled out an SBR AR and he completely lost it and told me I couldn't have one of those unless I was a cop so I just packed up and left. Won't be back :)

But they are one of the few that allow FMJ.

My range allows it, but its private. Ill take you with some time if you want to check it out. Annual dues are only $75 and there has been talk lately of it limitiing membership so you may want to look into it sooner rather than later

I would love to go sometime. I don't see any range information listed on their website...what do they offer for ranges/distances? Pistol/rifle? Indoor/outdoor/covered/100 yds/200 yds/etc?

I would have held up the '06 round and said "that's funny I was a puttin' these fellers in there and it ain't done blown up yet"

Been about five years since I've been to Gibson's.

Sonds as if the old man's finally gone off his rocker (last time I was there he was just asleep) and you just saved me the effort of going back.

Hate to hear that, but if that's the way it is, then we just look elsewhere.

That's what I'm thinking, Rich. Shooting is expensive enough already, let alone when you're being treated like an inconvenience. I told him on the phone today I'd take my money elsewhere. He hung up on me.

That rule has since been relaxed. Or at least did not seem to be in affect the last time I was there (mid-july). I usually only ever load 5 rounds at a time anyway, so even when it was in effect, it really didn't bother me too much.

The pissed-off sounding guy can be a dick. I don't care for him. But he doesn't keep me from enjoying myself for a morning at a gun range.

They do a brief description in their club rules section. It is all outside but the firing line is covered.

3 pistol bays with adjustable distance targets that go out to 15 yards
2 sets of falling plates (6) at 25 yards
10-12 benches at 50 yards with some gongs in between a few of the benches
12 benches at 100 yards with some gongs in between
4 or 6 benches at 200 with 1 or 2 gongs

Very well kept and they offer some basic shooting equipment like sand bags, small sections of carpet to lay weapons on, rests, stools, and some other choice items.

It seems like there is always some sort of match on saturdays but the third saturday of the month they do a "fun match" with 22's. Just show up with any 22 and compete.

That's a heckuva deal for my wife and I to shoot all year. I need to figure out what's going to be cost effective for me over the long run but at this point this place is high on my list. Thanks and maybe I'll see you there sometime

I'm a member at Haltom also and it is definitely worth it. Everybody's friendly and because it's private you don't have to deal with the trash that can be at other ranges(people, not literal trash), it's also less crowded.

The initiation fee is steep, but it's a 1 time expense, and I don't know of any other 200 yard ranges in the area. I love it, and at $75 a year plus NRA membership it's a bargain if you shoot at least once a month. For me it's a no-brainer as it's only 15 minutes away. From Richardson or somewhere up there I don't know.

I have been a member of the Haltom rifle and pistol club for 20 years. One of the best places, and safest places to shoot I have ever been to. There is alot of milsurp shooters there that shoot fmj. You have to use lead on the falling plates though, I think....chris3

You can use fmj on the falling plates. Magnums are prohibited as well as bottleneck cartridges, rifles, shotguns, and anything else that would cause damage.

Come to think of it, there are alot of milsurp shooters out there. I was there not too long ago and one member had the rifle from the movie JFK. It was an 03A1 (all original too) I think, absolutley gorgeous rifle. He asked if I wanted to shoot it but I had heard what he paid for it so I passed and simply enjoyed the view.

I don't believe so. I worked at a range in Fort Worth for 3 years.
The manager said that it doesn't really damage it. The insurance companies
get a good caveat to include this as an excuse to avoid a claim.
If the back stop is constructed properly, it should not cause damage.
